- Description: A beauty to behold, the mermaid was also considered one of the worst omens to come across for sailors upon the sea. For she was known to have a lyrical voice that was able to captivate the most hardened of men and enchant them to the point where they would leave their ships and drown. Mermaids were also known to spread false hope to the sea faring men by telling foreboding tales of how they would never see land again, or tricking them into believing that they were close to shore.
