• Chapter 1
    *Jared*

Alaska is cold year-round; my kind of weather. I lived in the northernmost point in Alaska, the coldest place in the state to live in, and my tiny town was called Cortoe. It’s amazingly tiny, trust me, and I’ve lived there for my whole life, until they came.
I was sick of being inside the tiny house I lived in with my dad. I was thirteen, but looked like I was eighteen, maybe even older. Anyway, my dad was out hunting and he told me to stay in the house. I hated it, but I knew why he told me to stay. There were Wolf Hunters out. To be clearer, there were Werewolf Hunters out. They were spotted by my father and he was certain they were coming after the only werewolf family this far north: us. He told me not to change into my wolf form because that would just attract them like a magnet. Even in my human form, it could attract them, but not as easily.
Well, back to me being stuffed in a tiny house. I was just sitting there, staring at the blank walls. The luminous glow of the fire was the only light source. It has been an hour since Dad left and there was still no sign of him. I had the crazy idea of going out to look for him, but he was a big man now, he can take care of himself.
I, suddenly, heard a knock at the door and I jumped up to go open it; although, I felt a little nervous. What if it is a Wolf Hunter? I thought. They could kill me in a second flat. I sighed and took the chance anyway. I opened the door and the little girl who lived closest to me was there; her name is Misty.
“My momma and papa are...dead!” she yelled. “Some scary people came and killed them! Everyone else is dead, and I’m scared....”
The moment she said “scary people” I knew who it was: Wolf Hunters. It wouldn’t matter if I turned into a werewolf now. I pushed her inside and quickly closed the door. I turned her around and she stayed. Then I exhaled slowly and thought of a wolf with black fur. Abruptly, a black pelt grew on my body and my clothes disappeared. Ears popped out from the top of my head and a snout grew on my face. I went down to all fours and my paws were ready to run. It all happened in a split second. The little girl knew my family’s secret (everyone in the tiny town knew our secret) and she jumped onto my back.
I ran around the town, looking to see if they were still there. I didn’t find anyone but my dad. “We have to go now. They found us,” he said. Then, he ran south.
I followed him with Misty on my back. I knew where we were going, we planned to go there if the Wolf Hunters found out where, exactly, we lived.
We were off to a town in Montana called Libby. It took us more than a week to get to Montana because we had to stop every so often for Misty. Sometimes, we would forget that she was mortal and forget to ask her if she needed anything when we were near a town or city. Sometimes, we had to hear her complain for a few miles. But, we eventually reached out destination and, there, I met this girl....

    Chapter 2
    *Scottlyn*
You know, I wasn’t always this way. Actually, I used to be a sweet little girl with good grades and lots of friends. I used to live in a condo in Hamilton, Montana. It’s a busy place and my dad and I enjoyed it. We were normal people like everyone else in the city; until I turned thirteen. Then, we had some issues....

On January seventh (my birthday), I began to feel cold all the time; even in the hottest of buildings. I ended up being a little stronger every day and, every time I’d brushed my teeth, I realized my teeth were a little sharper. People said I was paler; then, I began doing something that, I thought, was ridiculous: reading people’s minds. Crazy, right? Well, no. The first few times I just thought I was just being lucky at guessing what my friends were thinking about, but I soon realized I was reading their minds.
All those things, eventually, got me to wondering if it was just puberty or if something important was going on. It took a few days to make my mind up, but I asked my dad what was happening after two weeks of this crazy stuff. He was very surprised when I told him everything. He didn’t say anything till the next day, when people suddenly smelled really good and sweet. I really hoped that it was just the perfume people at school were using, but I smelled my tom-boyish friend and knew instantly that I was going crazy; she never wore perfume. When I got home that day, my dad told me the whole story.
“I feel stupid for saying this and you are going to think I need help or something, but it’s true,” he started. “You are a....Vampire.” I was confused for a moment, and then thought that he did need help. “You can’t really argue with me about it; you have all the qualities a vampire would have: Sharp teeth, pale skin, cold skin, strength, keen sense of smell, and, eventually, golden eyes and amazing speed.”
“How did I end up as a vampire?” I said in a calm, quiet voice.
“Actually, you turned into a vampire in a rare way,” my dad said. “Usually, you have to be bitten in a certain place by a vampire. But you were born a vampire. Hmm....” He paused to think. “You were born with the venom already inside your blood, but it takes it ten to thirteen years to spread through the body and transform you into a vampire. That only happens when you are born as one. It happens so rarely that you are, probably, the only one on earth that’s originally a vampire right now. It’s also very good that you were originally one at birth because the process is painful, but I don’t know any more than you do on that subject. Oh, yeah, we are going to need to move to a place that is plentiful of animals to hunt.”
“Why can’t I just stay here and... drink or eat when I feel like I need to? Won’t I be able to run at fast speeds?”
He sighed. “Just in case, okay? I’m really sorry. I never wished for this to happen, you know.”
    “Wait, don’t I eat... humans...?”
“Not when you are born a vampire,” he said with no hesitation in his voice.
I was trying to gather all this information in. I should’ve been scared of myself, but I wasn’t. Then, a question popped in my head. “Hey, Dad? How do you know this stuff?”
“Um....” he said. “When you were born, the doctors found something in your blood that wasn’t very normal. At first, they tried to study it, but they soon gave up and came to the decision that it wasn’t anything that would harm you.”
I was still puzzled. “But how did you know?”
“Someone came one night and told us about you. I think he was a vampire as well, but I’m not completely sure. Anyway, he said that he could sense when vampires are born. I thought he was a crazy and I utterly ignored him. But now I can see that he was... telling the truth.” He was quiet for a few seconds, then, he continued talking. “He gave me this card.” He pulled out a folded, white card and handed it to me. It said:

“Um... that’s a little weird....” I said when I read it five more times. Then, I changed the subject, “Where are we moving to, anyway? And... when?”
“I guess Troy because we need to go to that book store,” he replied. “Because we are in a hurry, we will need to leave as soon as possible.” I glared at him as if I wanted more information. “A week,” he added. I sighed.
Well, we left and all my friends seemed like they’d rather die than have me leave. We lived in Troy for a year, but someone found out my secret. We left Troy two days after I found that out. Then, we moved to the country, but my dad and I got tired of driving two hours to get to the nearest town. So, we ended up in a town called Libby, where I met this boy....
