• Chapter 4: Hurry! Hurry! School is about to start!

Okay… I know, I know. You are probably utterly confused at this moment right now. With about a bazillion questions to ask me. Well… maybe not a BAZILLION questions, but you get what I mean.

First up… Dr. Hakushi is like… what you call my adopted dad. And well… it’s very convenient to have Dr. Hakushi as my dad. Since Let’s just say I’ve been born with a bad heart as I’ve been told constantly over and over again. So I can never push myself hard and be aware of what I eat. But Dr. Hakushi would say it’s fine that I eat anything I want and when I want. I guess he’s such a nice doctor/dad, right?!

I slipped through the empty hallways, glad to see that no one was lingering around in the hallways.

In the corner of my eye, I spotted a sign, "The Infirmary".

I trotted down the stairs as quietly as I could, but as quickly as I could.

“Tou-san!” I barged into the room, flunging the door open, alarming someone sitting on the stool right next to the door.

    I heard a loud gasp.

“L-l-lyza! Don’t give someone a heart attack like that!” A women that looks about 20 years old pressed her hands to her chest, looking as if she was on the verge of passing out.

“Oh! Kurie! Have you seen Tou-san?” I asked, looking around.

“Oh? Dr. Hakushi? You just missed him awhile ago.” Kurie announced, going back to her clipboard she was holding, scribbling some random notes.

“Why do you need to find him?”

“Um… I kind of wonder did I leave any back up clothes in the infirmary here.”

“Hmm? Wh-” She looked up from her clipboard, looking at me in my pajamas.

I grinned as innocently as I could, of course that couldn’t work right now.

“Lyza! What are you doing in your pajamas!” Kurie sighed, standing up in her seat, walking back into the infirmary.

I quickly followed her, trying to still maintain a innocent smile on my face.
Kurie walked into a small storage room, searching around with her hands.

“Aha! Here it is!” Kurie held a black medium size box and handed it to me.
I took it carefully, wondering what was in it.

“Hurry and change into them. I wonder how in the world could you come to school without changing!” she said, sighing and shaking her head lightly.

“They might be a bit baggy because these use to be mines when I was around your age.” Kurie added, closing the storage room, smiling kindly.

“Thank you Kurie!” I smiled hugely, running into the bathroom, quickly changing into Kurie’s old school uniform.

I guess you’re probably wondering what was my relation with Kurie? Well. She’s my dad’s partner here at the school and well, they’re sort of bests friends since they were kids.

I slipped on the uniform, pulling my hands through the sleeves. The sleeves were a bit baggy but other than that, it perfectly fitted me.
The skirt also fitted quite well and it was just my size, just a bit above the knee.

I dusted off the dust that might be on the skirt, now knowing how long Kurie’s uniform might have been stuck in the storage room.

“Sheeesh Lyza! How long can you be in there?!” Kurie shouted.

“School is about to start! So hurry up!”

“Okay, Kurie!” but under my breath I muttered something else after that, “mom”.

Then I caught myself in surprise.

True enough, I knew that I’ve been adopted. Since Dr. Hakushi has different eye color and hair color, and we have nothing, absolutely alike.

But I don’t feel like what most orphans do, because already Dr. Hakushi and Kurie have already filled in the position of my own mother and father.

And I’m very grateful for them. If they had never been in my life then… I don’t think I could be the person I am today.
