It was during winter-time, our school was having yet another school festival. Every single class had to participate, coming up with a theme. This year our class was doing a café. Thank god my teacher, Mrs. Clemmen’s assigned me the job of supervisor, but seriously my classmates acted like a bunch of 4th graders. I was irritated and I told Matt to take over. I peered my eyes over the crowd of students looking for Hikaru-chan my one and only, best friend. I found her by the window her fingertips brushing the frost that had accumulated overnight. Her dark black shoulder-length hair in place, her green framed glasses peering out into the winter wonderland. Her dark eyes fixed on someone, it just had to be Nathaniel. I walked over to her, nearly tipping over a bucket of paint. I asked her if she knew of a quiet place I could relax at. She smiled, taking me by the arm leading me to the classroom’s door. She peered inside, grinned evilly and whispered “Have fun” into my ear, closing the door behind me. Of course at that moment I had no idea what she was talking about, until I saw him.
His head lying back, eyes closed or so I assumed, not that I could see much, his long blond-brown hair covering everything up to the midway of his nose. I crept over to his desk and covered his eyes. I stood there for a while, waiting for him to say something, I was starting to feel idiotic when he said “I’m not helping, the café idea is just plain dumb.” Surprised I staggered forward and fell clumsily to the floor. Alexander peered an eye open and laughed at me “Geez. Andrea your such a klutz” he said between stifles of laughter. I pulled at his chair and he fell backwards taking the chair down with him. “You may not be a klutz, but you still fell” I told him after giggling non-stop. I brushed myself off quickly and gave him a hand. He seemed to hesitate before taking my hand and bringing me down un top of him. We both laughed hysterically and I rolled off him. We laid there on the classroom floor staring up at the ceiling. It wasn’t long before someone came in, and it was none other than his ex-girlfriend Clara.
Her brown hair contrasting her light gray eyes. Her clothes bright and cheerful, she had originally lived here in Wisconsin but she moved because of personal reasons to Arizona, ending her relationship with Alexander. She would come during her school breaks though. Alexander was standing now, and sheepishly walked over to Clara, were she threw her arms around his neck and buried her face into his sweater inhaling his odor, a faint cologne with a just a hint of sweat. I stood up brushing off once again. She berly noticed I was there and when she did see me the only thing she said to me was “Hey Andrea, haven’t seen you in a while.” Whatever that meant. She excused herself and walked into the bathroom shutting the door behind her. Alexander walked back to his desk and slung his back pack over his shoulder. “Are you leaving I asked him?” Suddenly feeling dumb for asking the obvious. “Yeah, me and her are going out to lunch.” He grinned and I knew he was happy as ever. As he turned his back I told him to wait, I combed the back of his hair where it was all tangled and mest up. He grinned and thanked me. When Clara came out they started chatting immediately, heading out the door. Before the door closed I choked out a faint “goodbye” before grabbing the book un top of my desk and heading over to his desk. Where I read about 19 pages, and then out of nowhere. I started to cry.
It didn’t surprise me that I had cried for a long time, I mean I loved Alexander. But what did surprise me was that he got back no later than 45 minutes after he had left. When he walked up to his desk, I blurted out “You came back that fast?” I knew I had somehow hurt him because he flinched back. “She met up with some old friend and they went to get a latte at starbuck’s.” I didn’t necessarily think she would abandon him, but here he was. He stood there for a second and then told me if I could get off his seat. Of course I was embarrassed and mad at the same time. I slid out of the seat and walked into the bathroom, locking the door. It didn’t take long for him to notice all the tears on his desk. He hesitated knowing it was none of his business but oh well. He walked up to the door and knocked over and over again, until I finally opened the door. “Hey are you okay? I mean I know that you were crying..” he trailed off. “I’m fine, happy as anyone can be, now if you’ll excuse me I have to take a shower.” I slammed the door in his face, and took my time in the shower. I felt bad about slamming the door in his face. But I couldn’t let him find out. There was no way. After I had gotten dressed, I took my MP3 switching to some Kill Hannah which would soon follow by Escape the Fate. I caught a glimpse of my watch. I took an hour shower. Seemed pretty normal to me.
Alexander had been waiting for an hour, thoughts crossing his head all about Andrea. Now this wasn’t normal he always thought about something else. Never about Andrea, actually it had been a long time. He was starting to worry, he walked over to the door and knocked repeatedly. She wouldn’t open, Alexander called out her name “Andrea? Are you okay? Can you hear me?” Nothing. He was going to have to knock the door down. He would worry about the consequences later. He kicked the door open on his first try, so playing soccer had paid off after all. It didn’t surprise him what he found. She was sitting on the sink her hair covering one eye and her earphones on, one eyebrow perked up probably thinking “what is wrong with him?” He didn’t care, not one bit.
I stood there astonished, seeing Alexander standing there next to the door that had been ripped off its hinges. I took off my earphones, turned off my MP3 and before I could say a word, he tugged at my arm and lead me to the desk in front of his. “Sit” he commanded, so I did. He stared me in the eyes. “Why were you crying? Better yet. Who made you cry?” I wouldn’t answer, I just stared. Hesitantly I parted my lips and said “You did.” His face was expressionless, I was sure he hadn’t blinked for a minute now. He shot another question at me, “Why?” He wasn’t wasting time. He wanted to get to the point, and now. I sat there not knowing what to do. But my lips did the talking, and I sat there astonished from what had come out “I like you, I really do, for a long time now, and seeing you with Clara made me realize, that I would never be able to be with you, no matter how much I wanted to.” His eyes were still fixated on me. It took him a while to respond but when he did I expected him to say exactly what he was saying, which was “I’m sorry but I can’t return those feelings.” It didn’t bother me though, and then I smiled. I actually smiled, nothing fake or forced, it just kind of happened automatically. He smiled back at me, and then he asked nervously “We can still be friends if that’s okay.” I couldn’t say no. After I agreed he blushed shyly. He had blushed!! That had to be the start of something. We spent the rest of that afternoon just sitting around and laughing at, and with each other. Just like friends.
