• It’s Natural

I woke up with a ringing in my ears. My head’s swimming, and it’s hard to remember anything at all. I can’t even remember what my name is. All I know is that I’m strapped to a seat in what appears to be the wreckage of a plane.

Slowly, very slowly, my memory begins to come back to me. My name is Lokki. I have no family to miss me. My friends are few and far in between. My profession: an assassin.

My job is to take out anyone I’m paid to, well, paid enough that is. I’m still not entirely sure about where I am, but I do know how I got in this charming plane crash.

I was on my way to my next “job” when our plane ran right through a freak storm, not pleasant at all. The rain pounded against the windows so hard I thought they’d break. The thunder sounded something like what I imagined a stampede of elephants would sound like. The lightning was really bright, and with every flash it illuminated the entire plane so that I could see all the empty seats beside my own where I sat in the back.

From outside I heard something explode, but I figured it was just the thunder. Wow, I was wrong. I looked out only to see the wing of the plane flaming. I freaked out and tried to get up from my seat but found myself strapped in. The wing snapped off, and we spun toward the ground. The last thing I remember was the air masks dropping from the ceiling and putting mine on.

Now that I remember what happened, I feel a wee bit safer but not a lot considering my position at the moment. I’m in an unknown location with no known means of transportation or communication. Not cool. Oh well, might as well figure out where the heck I am.

As I get up from my seat to get my bag, I once again realize I’m still buckled up. I undo it and stand up and stretch. I grabbed my bag and surveyed my surroundings. From back to front there’s nothing but ripped up seats and broken glass. Going through my bag, I grab anything I can use: knife, lighter and chocolate. Then I throw my bag to the side. I won’t need it anymore. I gobble down the chocolate and strap my knife to my belt and turn to head out of the plane.

Then, from the back I hear someone making a ruckus as if trying to escape. Going to the back I find a door pinned closed by a seat. Moving the seat aside, I opened the door and found the stewardess trapped and scared. She didn’t seem to know where we were either. She thanked me and we decided it would be best to get out of the plane to see if we could find any kind of communication device that still worked.

As we walk out of the plane we find that it’s not the scariest place. The trees are plentiful and placed almost side by side. I turn around to see if I can find a way out, but there doesn’t seem to be any at first glance. When I look closer, I see an opening.

From behind me, I hear a scream. Spinning around I find…nothing. Where did the scream come from? Wait. Where’s the stewardess? Then from above myself I hear a rustle and I jump to the side only just soon enough to see a gigantic spider launch itself at me. It misses by a hairsbreadth.

All I can say is this. I hate spiders above any other living creature. I run like the devil himself is chasing me. I was never top of the class at running, I was more agile than anything, but when you’re scared, you can run even if you eat donuts for every meal.

I run until I’m both out of breath and in a clearing. There are gunshots and I jump and roll. On my spin around, I find I’m surrounded by men with smoking guns. I’m slightly outnumbered and outgunned, but I take up my fighting stance just in case they try hand-to-hand combat on me. You never know with buff guys like these.

The biggest of them steps out toward me. He’s about six foot five and is about as round as a tree. He’s wearing a name tag that says his name, but at this distance I can’t read what it says. He stares at me for a long moment and then starts screaming at me in a really high and annoying voice in some language I don’t speak. Let me tell you something, that’s new because I speak about every language on Earth. It’s part of the trade.

Anyway, he’s still screaming when out of the forest comes about 1000 of those huge spiders. That totally shut the guy up and the rest of them started shouting. I still can’t understand a word they’re saying. It’s kind of annoying really. Now I’m not focusing on the people because I notice that behind them is a huge, 20 foot wall and the doors to it just opened. Out of it are running more guys with guns.

Well, since I don’t like these spiders and these guys seem willing enough to take out them for me, I’ll just sit inside their nice little base safe and sound. So, slipping past everyone, I get inside safe enough and no one notices me. Well all except the big guy, of course he’d have to notice wouldn’t he? Oh well. I run like mad and along the wall I see a nice big red button. I slap it and keep running.

When I slap it, the big doors shut and everyone’s stuck outside. Then I’m being picked up from behind by the big guy he throws me to the ground and I roll. I’ve been rolling a lot today haven’t I? Either way I manage to stay alive. I hear and feel him coming back from behind again and I pull out my knife and stab it backwards. I feel it connect and I jump back. He falls onto his back with the knife sticking out of his stomach and he bleeds to death.

Now I can finally read his name tag. It’s plain and simple, Jacob. Well Rest In Peace Jacob and sleep well. Now that I have this base to myself, I find it rather lonely. Far ahead I see a big building. Rushing ahead, I get to the building and I’m about to take the front door when instinct kicks in and I decide to take a side door instead. I open the door and walk in looking for a light switch. I find none on either side of the doorway. Suddenly, in front of me I see a screen turn on and words run across it. All it says is, “Don’t fear; it’s only natural you feel the pain as well.” Then it shuts off.

Through the silence I hear a hiss, and a new smell hits my nostrils. Poison. I run to the door like any poor fool and try and get out using my knife. Whoops I seem to have left it in that poor fellow Jacob. Even though I know I’m as good as dead, I keep fighting until the world is gone, and I feel nothing.
