• Jimmy woke to the sound of a loud bell ringing. Then, a short while later, Big Ben chiming. Jimmy listened for the number of chimes. Four. 'Must be 4am' he thought. Slowly he climbed down from his bunk and woke up the boy, younger than he was, from the other bunk and helped him to dress. Then Jimmy got dressed himself. After rushing quickly to the water trough to wash, Jimmy pulled on his boots and joined the long queue of boys that were trudging down the stairs.
Once they had finally reached the dining hall they had to get into another queue, this time it was to get their breakfast.
" Gruel again," muttered one boy, near the front of the queue, to another. The boy that had spoken first was called Ben Taylor. He was always getting into trouble and, at Lakeview Orphanage, it came with a very high price.
"Want me to pass it on?" asked the other boy.
" Yeah, we always do," replied Ben, " Numpty," and the boy got a flick on the ear for his trouble. And so the message went all the way down the line until it reached Jimmy. He refused to pass it on.
" Pass it on, idiot," said the boy in front of Jimmy,
" No. Why should I?" replied Jimmy stubbonly, " B'sides we'll just get in trouble," The other boy had a bad temper and got mad at Jimmy. He punched him. But Jimmy wasn't about to retaliate, he knew that the supervisors would tell him off for starting the fight, not the boy who actually had started it. So he just stood there being punched over and over in the stomach. Everyone that was watching just stared in amazement that Jimmy's temper hadn't 'gone off' yet. Charlie Tuck was watching. He was Jimmy's best friend and knew that any second Jimmy would actually 'go off'. And sure enough, as the boy prepard for another punch, he lost it. The boy raised him arm and, just as his fist was about to make contact with his face Jimmy grabbed his wrist and twisted it all the way round. He put his face right up to the other boy's and whispered fiercly,
" You listen to me. It is not essential to pass the message round. And there was no need to punch me like that. And you made me lose it,"
    " I am sorry,"
    " Don't do it again,"
"Alright, but please let me go!" The boy screamed.
