• I looked in the mirror and curled my lip back, revealing my teeth, pearly and white. I examined my hair line, perfectly blonde, not even a trace of black and then sat an inch from the mirror, staring into my eyes, clear blue, beautiful. My disguise was flawless! With my razor sharp fangs in visible, red eyes concealed behind contacts, and (as a precaution) my jet black hair dyed bleach blond, I could pass for a perfectly normal human. I grabbed the spray can from the top shelf of my closet and gave myself a tan. I had to do this every morning; one slip-up and they would find me.” Ronnie!” my foster mom called. “It’s Veronica, and I’m coming!” I yelled downstairs. I hated living here. I wished I could have my real parents back, but they were… no time to think of such things! I didn’t want to be late. I quickly (in human terms) walked downstairs and pretended to eat breakfast. The thing I hated most about living among humans was that they were so slow, my sister and I once trotted alongside a cheetah, and at full speed we could go up to 100,000 mph. I hurried off to school and met my sister Lucy half way. Her hair was bleached dark red, the color of blood, and made my tummy rumble. I was so weird to see her like this, green-eyed, red-headed, and slightly freckled. She was looking at me the same way.
“Your skin looks weird tanned so dark, I just can’t get used to it.”
“You’re lucky that Irish people tend to be pale, I hate spraying this stuff all over me. It actually feels like I’m burning. Thank God I can’t get a rash!”
“Be carefull, the red in your eyes is coming back. We’re gonna have to go hunting soon.”
“I’m fine, it’s just your hair. Reminds me of blood.”
“God, I know! I can’t stand to look in the mirror anymore.”
Lucy and I continued with our idle chatter as we walked to school. My sister and I had to finish our mission soon, or we would go crazy. Finally we had reached Oakwood High. The smell of humans was overwhelming in this place. “Hey, Ronnie! Over here,” yelled Justin waving at my right. I kept walking forward, but he was already heading my way. If I moved too fast people would notice, but I brought up my speed a bit. Apparently I was going too slow because, he caught up with me. “Hey, what’s up, Ronnie?”
    “It’s Veronica, “I said coldly, with a what-the-hell-do-you-want look.
“Well I just- hey! You’re eyes are purple! Aren’t they usually blue?”
“Um, no! Well yeah, but they uh- they change in the sunlight!”I lied, looking away. Who knew this fool could be so observant?
“Sorry Justin we gotta get goin’!” said my twin sister, dragging me into the girls bathroom with a dazzeling smile in Justin’s direction. I had almost forgotten about her.
“God! You would have thought that we would be better at escaping the male species after a whole month here, but no. It’s weird how humans are so shallow and conceited! Never had this problem with vamps!”
“I know! They just never learn to leave us alone, huh?” she said, fixing her mascara.
“So you weren’t trying to help me out?! You just came in here to do your make-up?!”
“No! But while we’re here…” she said slyly.
School was boring as usual. I didn’t really care anyway, seeing as I wouldn’t have a future here anyway. I had to blend in, but most pretty humans were bad at school anyway right? I just sat there pretending to take notes, and listening to my iPod. The volume was turned up pretty high, but it still couldn’t block out my teacher’s droning voice. That was another thing about humans- they always sounded as if though they were yelling! I suppose their sense of hearing is so bad they need to talk at that level to be heard, my vampire music was like whispering compared to that. I put on some human music and put it almost to the lowest point that it would go. It still sounded like shouting to me and I could hardly stand it. I couldn’t believe that they actually called this music! “Veronica?”my teacher called. “4.8973!” I answered subconsciously, realizing too late that I should have acted clueless. “Very good Veronica!” my teacher raved, “I was convinced you weren’t paying attention! That was wonderful and you don’t even have a calculator in front of you!” My whole class was staring at me. Oh, damn it all! I just blew my perfect cover, or at least damaged it. This ******** sucked! At least the mission was almost completed, though. Just a couple of days and we would have all of the info we needed, then we would leave. He would be dead soon. If only he was a stupid, helpless human, but no, he couldn’t even just be a normal vamp. Had to be one of the Originals. I looked over at Lucy and could tell, by reading her body language, that she was thinking of the same thing. “We will avenge them,” I said, in a vampire whisper, through my teeth. She nodded her head slightly, a grim expression crossing her face.
