• Chapter 2

The man led us to a small cabin filled with others from different villages than my own. He pointed to an empty corner where it was assumed we were supposed to sleep. I walked over to the corner with Ninfa, and Hades. The room was silent as we slowly made our way to out small area. When the white man had gone an older woman approached us and began speaking to us in our own language. "My name is Isabella." "I was born on a field not much different form here. We are considered slaves to them. We don't eat, sleep, bathe, or even piss without their permission or consent."

I listened fearfully attentive, grasping hold to her every word. "They will teach each of you a language known as English. Dusk to dawn you will work their fields and do back breaking work without a break. If you are caught not working, you will be beaten." I sucked in a breath and fright filled my eyes and heart making it pound relentlessly. I began to speak just barely above a whisper. "Why are we here, what do they need us for?" Isabella frowned but answered. " To them we are no more than mules who tend to their every need. We are known as slaves, Negro, we are not considered equal, not even close. To them we are nothing." Her words felt like weights crushing my heart and hope.

I urged Ninfa and Hades to go to sleep. We all prayed to God for our Mother's an Father's souls to be welcomed into heaven and for god to watch over us in this place, then we fell asleep.

I didn't sleep well all night, I kept thinking about Isabella's words. " To them we are nothing." I forced myself to think of something else and suddenly thought of the boy who had come out of the large house. I wondered if he felt the same way as the other White people.
