Chapter ~Three~ Domino Effect
We talked and talked. Demetri and I, a never-ending flow of questions swiftly poured into the conversation. We wandered on and on into Demetri's thoughts, beliefs, hobbies, and other questions. After asking and debating over the abandoned thought of taking my life, we attempted to stay off harder to answer questions. He seemed determined to change the subject through each question, but it always looked as though he forgot that determination.
After countless hours of my queries, he said, "Let's talk about you, or should I write my Autobiography now?". I laughed and agreed to changing the subject to his questions, though many of mine remained. "Cara, why aren't you afraid of me?" He said confident and ready for whatever I might throw at him. I replied with a simple, "I don't know. Should I be afraid?" He just stared at me, the glare burning through my thin wall of confidence that stopped me from explaining. I sighed and said, "Well...I hear about murder every day. You should know that humanity is so blood-stained, that it is common knowledge of one's murder, right?" I said it harsher than I meant. He stared at me, amazed. "So...You're not afraid? Not at all?". He was getting annoying by now.
"No, I'd have gotten rid of the mirror, wouldn't I?", I said the stressing confusion of not knowing what he meant by his question starting to burn in my answer. He noticed this and moved on, "Where did you find this mirror, anyway...?" I thought about this for a moment."I think it was left when we moved here. It was through a crawlspace hole, glass facing a corner of a dank room. Why?" While I said this, I was amazed I didn't figure it out earlier. Did he kill the last residents of this house...? I stared at him for what started feeling like days. "Are you okay? Should we stop for today..?" I looked at him, processing his words and slowly said,"Maybe we should...I'm feeling odd..."
He looked at me with a half-sad, half-curious eyes. I waved good night to him as he faded off. I finally started questioning how the mirror itself worked.
Could he watch me whenever? Could he step out at any time? Could I step in?
What would happen if I tried? I walked back over to the mirror and before my hand could touch, I saw Demetri's hand. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw it. Letters and numbers and odd characters of every language, no doubt, where carved, or burned, into his hand. I looked at him, horrified. What happened to him? And, does he only show himself to stop me from getting inside the mirror? I slid my hand over the surface to the right, and with percise movements he did the same. He even shared my look of confused horror. I fell backwards at a knock on the door and the farthest part of his body did also, until you could only see his legs shimmering away.
I got up and answered the door to find my sister, Mia. She looked at me for a minute, and said, "Are you okay? I heard you fall...And jeez, did you see a ghost or something? You're really pale. You left your backpack on the stairs, but I didn't want to bother you because you were talking to someone on the phone or whatever." I only stared at her, confused. I looked at the corner closest to my bed. My backpack wasn't were I put it...What did she say? The stairs? But I know I hung it up...What's going on...? I looked back over at her, trying to cover up my horror and confusion, smiled and said, "Thanks, Mitts."
She smiled back and walked off, aparently falling for my acting. I took my bag and dug through it. Finding only a photo and a note.
"14:50" "12:34" "11:01" Times..? But the first was military time for 10:50...What did theese mean? I looked over at my clock out of reflex. 10:37 PM...I dropped the confusing thoughts and looked at the photo. In it, there stood three people. A tall, brown-eyed boy was grinning, a girl a little shorter than the first boy was smiling but not looking at the camera, and another boy, who was not smiling or looking at the camera. I looked in the backround for anything that I could conect with the notes, and there was only a sign that was mostly blocked off, but the visible letters were, 'W' 'E' 'A', there was also a clock reading, "10:58".
I fell down on my bed, welcoming sleep as a way out of all this confusion.
