• That night, she lay in bed next to Ryan. She had heard Max leave earlier, now she only waited for Ryan to fall asleep. Soon she heard her little brother’s breathing slow, and relaxed.
Now that he was asleep; Alexis crawled out of bed and snuck out the door to the hall. Making sure to make as little noise as possible, she went downstairs and after a few minutes of searching found one of Max’s guns and a flashlight.
The only protection she had against demons.
She knew what she was doing was crazy, but she just had to know. Her mother had always told her she had been a little too curious. So, she took a deep breath, even though she was still extremely fearful of what might happen to her, and fled the safe haven that was Max’s mansion.
She walked for hours, beginning to fear that she would never find her way back when she suddenly heard heavy breathing.
“Max?” She asked, too loudly as she raised the flashlight to see who it was.
But, as she feared, it was not Max. Instead it was five demons.
They seemed to have been sleeping, the way they were curled up in balls with their eyes closed. There bodies were deathly pale and their limbs seemed gangly and as though they were literally skin and bones. These demons had wings and the sharp teeth most of them had. There eyes were huge and nothing but white.
Disturbed from sleep by her question, one of them raised its head to look at her before letting out a completely inhuman screech, waking the other four. She started backing away as she tried to shoot them. One bullet caught one on its wing and another on its leg, but that was it. Soon they were all screeching and surrounding her. She was beginning to panic, looking around at the five demons encircling and closing in on their next prey.
Suddenly, one of them broke out of formation and charged at her, but by the time she moved the flashlight to the attacker, he was already dead. His head was torn off and blood was pooling around him quickly. She looked around at the other demons and saw they were no longer focused on her, but attacking someone else now.
She had liked to believe it was Max that had saved her. But that was only wishful thinking.
Fighting back the demons were those same arms she remembered far to vividly, she knew every inch of what the demons were attacking and it almost gave her a heart attack to see it in the flesh again.
Looking at her with hunger in its eyes was the demon that had killed her mother.
She didn’t waste anymore time. She ran. Ran back the way she came and never stopped until she felt she was going to die of exhaustion, and something grabbed her arm.
    She screamed.
