• Angelica 13 yrs old

I stared at our huge Christmas tree as i was waited at home for my parents to return. They were picking up my Uncle Joe, my Aunt Silvia and my cousin Yazmin from the airport. Tomorrow was Christmas and they were coming over to visit. I like my cousin Yazmin, she’s like my sister. But I cant stand her parents. Whenever they come to visit they treat me like I’m invisible. And whenever they do talk to me, they always compare me with Yazmin. How much smarter she was and prettier. My mom and dad have never caught them saying those things to me, if they did I’m sure they would never invite them back.

Yazmin, on the other hand, doesn’t act that way. We were about the same age, I was two months younger than her. Although she is an only child, and she gets everything she ever asks for, she is not conceded in any way. Sure she’s popular and she has a lot of friends, but she’s nice. She is my favorite cousin, well, my only cousin, therefore my favorite. My family is very small.

I only have one brother, Michael. He is one year older than me but he is the best big brother anyone could ever ask for. For an 14yr old, he was very mature and polite when he had to be. Otherwise he was a big goof. He knew exactly how my Aunt and Uncle treated me. He insisted on telling mom and dad but I told him no. If they never came back I would never see Yazmin again.

The doorbell rang and I rushed to it, thinking it was my parents. Instead I was greeted by my very best friend, Erick. Erick was my friend since I was two. My mom and his mom are very close friends. So she took me to meet Erick one day. I was shy at first but we ended up playing the whole day. We have been best friends since.

“Hey Angie.” He smiled brightly at me. I smiled back.

“Hey Erick come in.” I stepped aside to let him in. He automatically went to sit on the couch.

“Where are your parents?” He asked, looking around.

“They went to pick up Yazmin and her parents from the airport.” I said. He beamed.

    “Cool, Yazmin’s coming?” He asked.

“Yea for about two weeks.” I said. Yazmin and Erick were also great friends, she said he was like the big brother she always wanted.

“Awesome. How long does it take to get from Kansas to California?” he asked. I shrugged.

“I don’t know. Probably like-” I was interrupted by Michael.

“Ang, who was that? Are mom and dad home yet?” He asked. You could hear his footsteps running down the stairs. Once he got downstairs, he started looking around. His face fell when he didn’t find anyone. He always got excided whenever Uncle Joe and Aunt Silvia came over because, despite how badly she treated us (Me mostly) they always brought awesome presents.

“They’re not here yet Michael.” I said.

“Oh.” He said sadly. Then he spotted Erick and he smiled again. “Hey Erick. How you doing, bro?”Ok they weren’t actually brothers but they might as well be.

“Hey Michael, I actually just came by to invite you guys to the big Christmas party my parents are throwing.” I smiled.

“Sure! We would love to come!” I said. Erick’s parents were the best. They treated Michael and I as one of their own.

“Awesome! Is your mom making her chocolate chip cookies? ‘Cuz, you know her cookies are the best!” Michael said.

    “Yea, I think so-”

    Ring Ring Ring

    Ring Ring Ring

The phone rang and I rushed over to answer it.

    “Hello?” I answered.

“Angelica? Is that you?” My Aunt’s annoying voice came through the speaker. I rolled my eyes. Who else? I thought.

“Yes Aunt Silvia, it’s me.” I sighed.

“Where are your parents?” She asked. I was confused.

“Shouldn’t they be there by now?” I asked.

“No, we got off the plane one and a half hours ago and no one is here yet.” She said in an irritated tone.

“Well, I don’t know. Maybe-” Michael turned on the TV and changed it to the News Channel. The reporter guy was on the screen, behind him was what looked like the freeway.

There has just been an accident on the 101 freeway, a drunk driver crashed into a car sending it flying into others….” The reporter went on. The 101 freeway. There’s probably traffic.

“Yea, there was an accident on the freeway my mom and dad are taking. There’s probably traffic. Don’t worry Aunt Silvia. They should be there in a little while.” I told her.

She sighed on the other side. “Okay but they better get here fast.” She said.

“Okay then, I’ll see you in a lit-” the line went dead. I stared at the phone. I can’t believe she hung up on me! I put the phone back in it’s place. I went to sit with Erick and Michael on the couch.

    “What happened?” Erick asked.

“She hung up on me.” I said. Michael rolled his eyes and we kept watching the news.

“The first car went flying and crashed into 3 other cars. 10 were injured three were killed…” Michael put it on mute.

“Wow. Three killed and ten injured.” he said. I shivered.

“That’s scary.” I said. Erick nodded in agreement. The doorbell rang again. No one made a move to answer it. I sighed and got up.

I opened the door and to police officers were standing there, looking at me with sympathetic eyes. My eyebrows furrowed.

“Are you Angelica Chavez?” The fist, taller one, asked.

“Y-yea.” I had a very bad feeling about this.

“Ang, what’s going on?” Michael was at my side along wit Erick. They looked up to the police officers.

“What’s going on?” Michael asked, looking kind of scared.

“Are you Mr. and Mrs.’s Chavez kids?” The other one asked. We nodded. “I’m sorry, your parents have been in a tragic accident, both of them are dead.” I gasped and my eyes were stinging with tears. Michael stayed emotionless. “We’ve contacted your Uncle and your Aunt. We found them in the airport. They have been informed and they’re on their way here.” I couldn’t believe this. No this is not happening.

“No. no, no, no, no, no.” I said while shaking my head. Michael snapped out of it. He looked on the verge of tears but he was able to control it. Erick, who was on my side wrapped his arms around me. Michael turned to the officers.

“Thank-you officers, for informing us.” His voice sounded all shaky. The officers smiled a sad smile.

“Okay. We will just be outside if you need us. We’ll wait here until your Uncle gets here.” Officer Sheryl, or at least that’s what his nametag read, said. “I’m very sorry.” he said before both of them walked out.

    “Angie?” Erick said.

“Ang, are…are you ok?” Michael said sniffling. I turned to look at him. Some tears were running down his cheeks. I took one look at him, I broke into sobs. Michael was crying too, but he tried his best to hold the tears back, because he new I would cry even more if he did too. Erick held me tight, letting me cry on his shoulder.

“Shhh, it’s ok Angie, it’s ok.” He kept saying. I could tell he was trying not to cry too. My mom and dad were like his second parents. I knew it hurt him as much as it hurt me.

“Mommy, Daddy.” I whispered. After a while Michael and Erick were sobbing with me too, and after what seemed like hours, the doorbell rang again. No one bothered to get it. A second later the door burst open and Yazmin came running towards us. She hugged me and started crying too.

“I’m….so….sorry.” She said between sobs. I couldn’t say anything. I could hardly even breath anymore. My chest hurt so much and my head was starting to hurt. I heard my Aunt and my Uncle talking to the officers in the background. I could tell my Aunt was crying and my Uncle’s voice was a bit shaky.

So my parents are dead. They're never coming back.

This is the worst Christmas eve ever.
