• Shi no Ohime-sama (Princess of Death): Chapter 1

The light blue sky was as endless as it always was with white, fluffy clouds that looked like cotton. My school appeared the same it always is—a plain, white, three-story, brick building with large, metal double doors as the entrance painted a black deeper and darker than the night sky. Our school was shaped so it looked like a 'u,' a lowercase 'n,' a 'c,' or a backwards 'c' if you peered at it from inside a helicopter. A dull grey sidewalk surrounded by contrasting, bright green grass led to the entrance of the school as well as to the end of the school property.
A wind passed by and fluttered the edges of my skirt which ended just above the knees. My tartan skirt was and mostly black with the crisscrossing yellow and white lines. I wore a white, short-sleeved shirt with puffy sleeves that ended with a black cuff with two white lines going across the middle of the cuff, a black sailor collar, and a yellow tie. That was of course our school uniform. I also wore long, white knee-socks along with black penny loafers. My long, black hair that reached my knees flowed behind me as I paced towards the building I have seen for myriad times.
    ---
Today, we had two new students transfer into our class. One was a brown-eyed girl with red locks who was in the same country as the rest of the class—Japan—before she transferred over here. The other transfer student was a boy with messy, purple hair—each strand being an inch long and black eyes that would suck you in like a black hole if you weren't careful. A blank expression was pasted upon his face, while the girl was grinning, showing her perfectly white teeth. The boy's eyes glanced around the classroom with a lazy look within them. The girl's brown eyes sparkled with delight and great joy, as she stared at her new classmates.
"Kannagi Shiki," the purple-haired boy introduced. His voice was calm, deep, and monotonous. (Note: In Japan, surname comes before last name.)
"Kaibutsu Aku!" the brown-eyed girl exclaimed as she lifted her arm to point at the ceiling while jumping up with her eyes closed. Her voice sounded bright, cheery, and loud.
The duo were soon directed to their seats and classes began....
    ---
It was lunchtime when I was confronted by a certain transfer student. I usually ate lunch at the rooftop. I had just finished and was staring at the fence made so students wouldn't fall off the roof. A chill ran down my spine as a cold, disgustingly sweet voice spoke my name—Aku Kaibutsu's voice. "Meijin Akari."
I turned around and my purple eyes spotted a smiling face with menacing brown eyes. It was the face of someone who thinks they've won. I refused to let my emotions get to me and kept a blank expression. Aku giggled; it was one of those girly giggles that annoyed me so. I sent a glared towards her.
"Oooo, scary," Aku commented, her smile still plastered upon her face. Her voice darkened and became a lower pitch. "But you won't be able to do anything, once you're gone."
Her nails sharpened and lengthened into claws as her eyes became red slits. Her white teeth became sharper and yellow. Aku's skin turned from beige to darker and darker into a deep shade of red. My eyes widened slightly at the sight of the unhallowed creature.
"I see. So you are an akurei (demon)," a monotone, masculine voice announced. Shiki Kannagi had appeared behind the nefarious...thing—akurei.
"Kannagi Shiki, a Demon Hunter with powers of Shinigami (Death God)," asserted the now red-eyed akurei. She turned around to face the purple-haired boy. "I hear you're an S-ranked Demon Hunter. Let's see if you really are one."
The red-skinned demon thrust her fist forward to punch the so-called Demon Hunter, however the black-eyed boy grabbed onto her fist as if he was simply stopping the fist of that of a child. Shiki lifted up the red-haired akurei by her fist and tossed her body towards the fence. He had done it as if Aku had weighted completely nothing, and to him, she probably did. I stared wide-eyed at the transfer student.
The Demon Hunter glanced towards my direction. Was I next? Could this be my end? Would I even be allowed to say my last words?
    ---
"So basically, you're saying that Kaibutsu Aku was an akurei and is trying to overthrow the Shinigami Empire, so they can take over the Celestial World and the Earthen World? And you're also saying that Death has been annihilated and that I'm his only bloodline?" I inquired.
The black-haired boy explained, "Yes, and since we are unable to enter the Infernal World due to certain reasons, we are unable to simply rid our worlds of them."
"Oh, this is just great." I was being sarcastic.
Shiki frowned and looked at me with a serious expression on his face. "This is a very serious matter. The world may fall into darkness if you-"
"I know, I know!" I interrupted. "But really, is there any proof this all is true?"
"I could take you to the Celestial World."
"Wait, what? You're actually going to-"
"Alright then, we will leave now."
"But we still have class-!" However, I was never able to finish that exclamation as we were being engulfed by a strange, white light....
