• The previous day the water pipe in our house broke and we found ourselves living at a motel for that single night.
The room we had was small, not nearly big enough for four people, so that's probably why I ony got two hours of sleep. Of course it didn't help that both of my parents had been snoring and my brother was muttering in his sleep.

The next morning I awoke, got dressed, had a disgusting bagel for breakfast, and then hopped in the car so my dad could drive us back to our house to get our schools supplies for school. It began snowing on the way and by the time we got to our house, my dad decided we wouldn't go to school.

I spent the day working on homework that would be due on friday. I emailed my english teacher my essay that was due today and she emailed me the homework. Then I checked the band and choir website to see if our winter gala concert was still on. The text on the website said,
"The winter gala concert has been postponed until january 8th because we, the adminstrative team, have already gotten a message that a student was hit by a car on their way to school."

It wasn't until after school ended when my friend called me did I know. I asked her about the kid getting hit. She said it was Alf...one of my friends. One of my close friends.
"Oh my god," I repeated the phrase again as again as my mind went numb and my knees gave underneath me. Before I started freaking out she told me he was in no danger of death and his injuries weren't bad.
Even knowing this, that night when I went to bed, whenever I closed my eyes I imagined something terrible. How he got hit by the car, the look on his face, when they loaded him into the ambulance, his sister, Katie, crying.

School was cancelled the next day...the superintendant had hurt one student already with his mistakes...after all, ice covered the roads that day.
My friends and I are visiting Alf, we're bringing him his favorite soda, coke, a stuffed animal that he adores, and some cookies.

    Still...what a terrible day.
