One Breath Short
One breath short
From my mother's womb
coldness and darkness consumes
my body lies limp in your shaking arms
as you mourn I am tucked into my eternal bed
My tomb
One breath short
of becoming someone, in short your son
you had little time, believe me I know
but I left this world nameless and unattached
with no sense of who I was or who I could have been
One breath short
of saving me, and there is no one to blame
mother, you had life stolen from you as well
My coming and going left father
short not one but two precious souls
One breath short
of life.
One breath short
of joy.
Just enough breath
to know love.

Description:
My AP English teacher decided to have us become Listeners of the Dead and Speakers of the Dead (For those who know the novel Ender's Game) We walked to a cemetery, where we were to find a grave no later than 1925. We were to create some sort of story or poem about what we thought their life could have been like.
I decided to dedicate a poem to a family's nameless infant son in his point of view after his passing.
May the infant son of George and Elizabeth Gerwig rest in peace.

- Wow. That is quite amazing. Very well-written. Bravo! You better get an A for that. I'm very impressed! Nicely done!
