• In the foot steps of a soldier

    Step by step,
    One by one,

The sun rising ahead of me,
All I can make out is his black mass

He seems so sure in the blinding snow,
And continues forward to only stop and wave me forward again and again,

The snow is about two feet deep,
The only way I keep from falling is to step in his foot prints,

    Their deep and big,
    Larger than both of mine,

    Even though I carry nothing,
He carries a M16, and a lot more gear, which doesn't slow him down,

    He's testing me,
I can tell by the grin on his face when he looks back

He's seems so alone this soldier I follow,
With only his gun to keep him company

    This man was different,
He was dark and a bit dreary,

This man was a soldier I could see that most clearly

As he pushed onward wanting me to follow,
I know at once something had changed in me,

He keeps moving forward and there seemed to be no where to go,
But he was sure of him self and he contained forward

Soon I found myself with boots on that seemed to big for me,
    Could I fill them?

A gun slug over my shoulder,
And a gear bag strapped on,

I could no longer see my soldier that had been ahead of me,
But the foot prints of the soldier still laded in front of me for some distance,

When I came to the end of those prints, I stared into the far snow,
I heard a rough voice, saying, "It's your time soldier, you lead now, look behind you …"

And so I did, There following in my foot steps was a young child wanting to follow,
"We Soldiers lead others, so they may lead at some point. Now just smile and wave him forward and keep moving for he will follow if he is truly to be a United States Soldier."

And so I smiled and pulled down my helmet then waved him forward and slowly moved forward,
To see they young child follow after me.

    Step by step,
    One, by one,

We follow in their foot steps,
Who have followed in others foot steps,

    We learn from the best,
And the best is what we become,

We are soldiers who fight every day and night,
It's only a life for those willing to fight

    Snowy weather,
    Icy and cold

    Keep moving forward,
And through it all you'll find that …

Your following in the foot steps of a Soldier.
