• Last Stand

    I look at my bowl
    Empty again

    I plead with my master
    ‘Food!’ I cry

    She cries salty tears
    They land in my water-bowl
    She needed an ear

    When she cries I listen
    I cuddle up to her

    My master’s master was up
    I felt her twitch

The sound of heavy boots echoed
It was the epitome of her fear
    For both of our fears

I stand defense ready for the battle
    Ready for the war
Ready for the possible last stand

    The door swung open
    I growled in warning

    He screamed something
    I didn’t understand it
    She cowered down whimpering

    He grabbed her
    I didn’t like that
    I pounced

    Scratching
    hissing
    clawing

    Whatever I could do
    ‘Danger!’ my senses screamed

As I pounced again a pain
    A deep achy pain!
    I slammed into something

    Screaming!
    My master was screaming!
    I tried to get up
    But my body
    My poor wrecked body
    This was my last stand

My vision, usually sharp and perceptive, blurred
I saw a sharp glint in my master's masters hand
I watcher in still horror as it came down
    Blow after blow

    Then he left
    We were alone

    She got up
Something wet and red ran from her body
    where the shiny thing struck
    she crawled toward me

    She called my name
Clear salty tears were falling again
They streamed from her big teal eyes
Like from those pictures she showed me
Of the glorious water falling off cliffs
She told me she would go there someday

My sweet innocent master laid down
    The red water touched me
    It was warm
I could feel her unsteady breathing

    Cold and warm
    We inhaled together
    Then exhaled

    It was our last stand
    She was gone
    I was fading

The dark room faded and a whiteness replaced it
I cocked my head to my name being called
    I looked forward

    My master!
    She was prettier than ever
Her long purple hair was no longer draped in blood
I shined in the divine light

    Her eyes glittered with joy
Her smile was real again and emitted her joy
White wings extended from her back

    That was our last stand
    But not our last moment
