Chapter One of Our Days As Friends
Chapter One Elizabeth
The alarm on my radio goes off, and I open my eyes. Today is the last day of summer vacation, and I have to get ready for sixth grade. I tell my brother, Robert, that school is coming, and remember waking him up like this all the time. “Elizabeth Marie Treichel! You are becoming so much like your mother when she was ten and a half!” “Grama! I’m eleven and three fourths, I don’t look like ten-year-old ma, and I’m in sixth grade! Not fourth!” “Stop yelling at your grandmother!”Ma said. Now, this wasn’t your average visit from grama Wayburn. Not like last year. Last year was maybe the best year of my life. “Liz, tell me your story, but tell me starting at third grade.” Asked Gramps. “Why third?” I ask. “Well, I know your second grade story, but I’ve never heard you talk about third grade. Besides, this is your golden year! You won’t remember third grade when you hit ten.” “I’m eleven!” I said annoyed. “Third I met Jane and Evan, fourth was boring, and that leaves fifth, the best year ever.”
