Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Ninety-One and Ninety-Two: Turkeytown
Thanksgiving, the time when we all get together and say thanks for vacation. I'm really happy to have a 4 day weekend, but before I go, I figured I'd drop a knowledge bomb on you all.

Gaians like to take a rumor and really, really run with it. It doesn't matter if there's evidence to support it, or if it even makes sense. It's just fun to have something to talk about, and I get that. Sometimes, though, those rumors live so long that they take on a certain verisimilitude, and users start to accept them as truth. So for this journal, I bring you:

Fleep's Top 5 Unsubstantiated Gaian Rumors and Assumptions

1. Gaia makes more than enough money. They're money-grubbing now!

My favorite thread on the subject:

Gaia Isn't Being Money Hungry

Though, QFE:

Lanzer
The cost to run 300 servers and keeping a team of more than 90 people working is very high. Imagine this, in San Jose the average pay is around 40,000 dollars to 50,000 dollars a year. Just multiply that by 90. eek There are much much more expenses in detail. All the equipment in the server room also raked up a 7 digit figure... Few websites face the challenge of having to serve up to 100,000 users at a time.

And we have more servers and employees now than shown in that quote.

Not to mention (relative costs are just estimates of mine, don't take them as any kind of definitive guide):
- The cost of office space ($$$$$$)
- Health insurance for employees ($$$$$$)
- Taxes ($$$$$)
- Bandwidth costs ($$$$)
- Computers and software licenses for employees ($$$$)
- Conventions and airfare ($$$$)
- Misc costs ($$$$)
- Employee benefits ($$$)
- Various other software licensing ($$$)
- Recruiting ($$)
- The cost of office supplies ($$)
- Accounting ($$)
- Advertising ($$)
- Contractors ($$)
- Various legal fees for contests, contracts, ToS, etc. ($$)
- Contests ($)
- And many, many more

And all of these are recurring fees.

With every event we throw, Gaia breaks new user records -- and as the site grows, we need more servers, more staff, and the costs grow tremendously.

2. Gaia doesn't listen to its users

I was actually in an interview today when we were talking to a potential candidate. One of the interviewers, who hasn't been here as long as I have, told the candidate this (paraphrased):

"One of the things about Gaia that's unlike any other company I've worked for is how attentive they are to the needs of the community. We have a ton of people who are watching the forums all the time - and when users say they want something or they're unhappy about something, someone looks into it right away. I've never seen another community that was this big where the administrators cared this much about what users thought."

Which isn't to say things always get addressed or fixed right away - but many of us are extremely attentive and sensitive to user wishes and moods. Users commonly mistake not getting what they want for us not paying attention - but we do, and most of us get distressed when users are upset.

3. Quest System was just made to support sponsors

This is just plain not true. Quests, as originally indicated, were supposed to be one of the central fun features of Gaia. What DID happen, however, is that I began to lead sponsorships, events, and quests - and quests suffered for it. Gaia may seem big, but resources are extremely tight. Code has to be refactored and servers have to be reconfigured to support the ever growing load on the site, so our developers are busy 112% of the time (yes, we actually add time to the time-space continuum just to meet deadlines - or it seems that way, sometimes).

Events and sponsorships took precedence, because -- well, we can't NOT have events, and Gaia needs the money to stay running. So why not hire more people? We do - but the requirements of running this site are growing faster than we can find good talent to support it. It's a bad thing because we're tight on resources... but a great thing because Gaia's becoming quite popular!

4. New feature [XXX] gives out gold! Gaia doesn't care about inflation

One thing users need to learn to accept is that Gaia will make features that give out gold. We're not going to stop doing this.

The other thing users need to learn is that this will not destroy the economy.

Several reasons for this include:
1. A TREMENDOUS amount gold leaves the site every day from banned accounts and users who decide to stop using Gaia. That's gold and items that are taken OUT of the economy. It may be one of the bigger gold sinks on Gaia.

2. The amount of gold generated by this feature is pennies compared to the amount of gold that's generated just by millions of users just clicking around the site.

3. The number of users who engage the abuse of these systems is much, much smaller than mosts users assume.

We do incentives like this to benefit Gaians who choose to participate. It's unfortunate that this trends has cropped up causing people to say "Booooo!" rather than "Yaaaay!" when we give them free gold.

5. The 2% fee didn't do what it was created to do!

The common assumption is that the 2% fee was supposed to stop or slow inflation, which isn't really the point - at least not exactly. I'm going to refer you guys again to the SF Sticky on the subject:

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/site-feedback/a-note-about-the-2-listing-fee-in-marketplace/t.31618999/

The basics:
1. It's supposed to perform a gold removal from marketplace transactions, just like how selling back to stores removes gold from the transaction

2. The listing fee cuts into more potential profit, making the returns on price manipulation (e.g., "artificial inflation" wink less attractive.

3. The 2% fee won't/wouldn't increase "inflation", because if sellers could increase their prices, there's no reason they wouldn't have before the fee. If their prices increased, and users became willing to pay it, then it's just a matter of what the market would bear - the 2% is irrelevant.

And QFE, for users who bandy around the popular term "inflation" when referring to the Gaia marketplace:

Quote:

Why do you keep using quotation marks when you say "Inflation"?

Not all prices rising are inflation.

Monthly collectibles, and event items, are in fixed quantity. And as more Gaians join, demand for these items is rising. Since prices in some sense represent value, we expect prices of old collectibles to rise. This is not "inflation", this is "real price increases". This is a good thing. Your inventory's true value increases over time, since more people want whatever you have.

In contrast to real price increases, inflation is when prices increases due to excess amount of currency flowing into an economy, faster than the rate in which goods and services are created. It is highly debatable whether this is good thing.

The new marketplace and the listing/ transaction fee, we are trying to balance the influence of the MP on the second type of price changes. It will have no influence on the first type of price increases.

Inflation is something we want, as long as it's happening at a reasonable rate. Even if you don't like it when you want to buy that MC, you DO want it when you want your MCs to increase in value.

Dayum Fleep, You Grumpy

It's 7:30 the day before Thanksgiving and I'm still in the office. You're dang tootin' I'm grumpy!

Actually, I just felt these are things that needed to be addressed - because they really do bother me. Not so much because users are complaining, but because I feel as though users are limiting each others' abilities to enjoy Gaia to its fullest with various misconceptions that float around.

I'm still the same chipper, good-natured, and slightly-mad Fleep you've grown used to. Just really tired at the moment rofl

The Meats
I'm going to go stuff myself with about 8 lbs of foodstuffs now. Everyone have a great holiday weekend!

Thank you for linking my thread heart

And in return I'm going to link this journal entry, because it definitely helps give the user a better of idea of what else you guys need to pay before besides servers and employee paychecks.

I agree, Gaia is extremely unqiue with how much they cater to users, I mean look at MCs. How many other sites would at extra poses to items to make users happy?

Or even let users design their own?

I think the bad mouthing of the quest system is something that bothers me the most. People don't seem to realize that to actually make the Gaia based quests you need money to do so, and one of the best ways to get money is through sponsor quests.

As for the free gold, I love free gold. It helps me out on my quest 4laugh

And the 2% fee I really don't mind, I mean I still use the marketplace. It doesn't bother me

*comforts*

Late nights at the office can make anyone grumpy, but just think of what you have to look forward too. Four days of you time, a nice comfy bed and lots of foodstuffs on Turkday.

So eat up and have a good thanksgiving whee

Have a happy thanksgiving, Fleep!
I had mine a couple weeks ago~ (Yay Canada.)

I think the people who actually take the time to think about it and realize that Gaia must be phenomenally expensive to run, are the ones who don't talk. So people are just getting propaganda from those who've decided Gaia has turned into a money-hungry website. Those who know better, just aren't bothering to talk.

Part of the problem is probably that users don't see mods/watchers/whatever in the forums. So they just assume that no one pays attention to what's going on.

eek Fleep sounds like a busy, busy boy~

I can promise that I'll never, ever say no to free gold. 4laugh

Thanks for letting us know what's going on. whee
We appreciate it.

Enjoy your weekend~
Eat lots, sleep more.
We want a healthy, happy, rejuvenated Fleep after this weekend.

On the other hand, I respect everything you do, and keep up the good work!

Have a happy Thanksgiving Fleep! domokun

At least you're not working ON Thanksgiving!

I am. And have for the past four years. And Christmas too. gonk

It's frustrating that there are so many ways for people to give money to the site, so many ways to get MC's, and the prices continue to climb each month. I've seen people saying "I remember the good old days when Letters were 10k."

gonk

Ya know what, we need a Gaia Official Relax Week.

Just take it easy, man. . . Stop with the "OMG Gaia IZn't Doing Anything About This!!!" threads. Tell users to ******** off, and that you don't have to do jack s**t, and to just hold on a minute, and chill. . . .

Chillax. Chilax. ...Chill. Lax. Laxative? Chill Laxative. I bet that feels good. Really, sometimes it burns and you know, a Chill Laxative wouldn't be such a bad idea!

I still think the 2% fee is the biggest mistake Gaia's ever made. Well, the auto-filtering of the word "*****" was stupider, but at least that was fixed XD

Have a great Thanksgiving, Fleep. You guys are working way too hard! We can wait another four years for Battle, trust me! XD

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a good long weekend!!

I'm glad you made the point that Staff does listen to Users. There are an infinite number of examples of items, features, etc that have been added due to input/feedback from users. There have been a few times even, that there's been such a backlash to a new thing that it's been taken away and re-done according to the feedback.

Anyone who claims that Staff doesn't listen has one of two issues:
1. They haven't expressed their idea publicly enough (one thread, one post isn't enough) or for long enough (sometimes it's taken 6 months for a popular thread to be noticed, then implemented by Staff), or not in the right place.
2. Their idea isn't implementable for one reason or another, or isn't currently feasible.

As far as the "inflation" issue goes, I'm really not sure what side I'm on. It seems that MCs' prices have spiraled madly upward and out of control (how does the Katana go from ~75k to ~250k in a matter of 6 months?), while all the other items have become nearly worthless (selling paper hats and most attainable fishing items is useless now).

"Verismilitude"? Haha, I used context clues, but I decided to look that word up anyway. talk2hand

I think one of the main concerns people don't come to realize is that this site, through all of its hardships and growing pains, is still free, and for the most part, nothing has to come out of anyone's pocket if they don't want it to, but they still have reason to complain over things.

I understand that it's nice to take feedback from people and try to cater to their needs/wants, but sometimes it'd be nice for some Gaians to take a step back and realize, "Hey. I can't enjoy/agree with everything on this site, and Gaia can't please everyone all the time." They might come to appreciate the depth of a site like this a little more.

Regardless, Fleep, I hope you have a wonderful weekend and that you enjoy your time off, and cram your face with foodstuffs.

i work on a more-than-120-employee digital marketing agency myself and i totally understand what goes on behind gaia.

you should turn this kind of journal posts into announcements once in a while. i feel like the type of users that subscribe to gaia staff journals and check the site feedback forums usually already knows how things actually work and the majority of the user base that endlesly complains about this issues just never gets to read this.

Happy Thanksgiving Fleep!

I still don't see why people think Gaia doesn't listen.

In fact, Gaia listens so well sometimes I think you've got some sort of freaky big brother thing going on. XD

Like, when I suggested NPCs in the Header, I had an overwhelming response. XD

Ask the Admins is a good example too.

Not to mention alot of items and features were based directly off of user suggestions.

VJ, Items in the Cash Shop, This past Halloween. (Well, I asked for Werewolves but you have to admit the Vampire event was epic. XD)

**Kerplodes from smart bomb** Ouchies!

Now that you've given us an idea behind quests, can you give us an answer if that's the new permanent route? In other words, we get that sponsorships and events weren't PLANNED to be the only use for Quests, but because of circumstancial evolution, will that be their only use from now on, or will new Quests that are neither event or sponsor related eventually come out?

If yes, please say when? whee

If Gaia didn't listen to users, why would they try to decrease some of the inflation, make new games and design item contests where users create an item? 3nodding People can be rather silly sometimes.

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving! Did you get all 8 pounds of turkey and other good things down?

commentCommented on: Fri Nov 23, 2007 @ 02:19am
1 and 2: Yes, there are times when I tell the users that what they think are just assumptions (pro and con of Gaia's doing). Gaia staff does listen to the users, which can be proven with MCs, feature updates, and addressing problem/issues from suggestions by the users. Sadly, the new wave of users and a group of regulars started to have little to no patience lately.

3. I was losing faith here, but now that I know the actual quests (Gaia related ones) are being worked on, I can only wait. Hope that the new user quests become more exciting/helpful. xD

4 and 5: The increase of MC items are because of supply and demand. I now understand that the new MC prices are reasonable, the increased population (demand) against old MCs (same or lower in supply). I still think the botting issue need to be dealt with. Some comments in arenas are questionable and threads complaining about bots in Durem fishing seems to appear more often.

I'm glad that you guys are taking a break though. You all need it. Have fun with your meat, but please remember to eat reasonably. One day wouldn't hurt but don't do it on multiple times. A healthy body mean more focused mind and faster reaction. xD

If you needed more money, I simply do not believe Cash Shop is the best way to do it.

Part of what makes Gaia, Gaia is the belief that eventually, if you want something, you can get it with enough hard work. But with every new, limited edition, special item that comes spilling out, it just feels like it's impossible to catch up.

And let's face it... some of the new items are nothing short of the best on here.

That's great and all, and probably true, forcing me to change my perspective, but why won't Lanzer give out any actual to calm us down? It's not like he would have to hunt to find them, Gaia is a large company, so it has to keep track of its' finances for tax purposes.

The users who whine about gaia's staff not listening are just the type who have no time to listen to what others say or till a staff member addresses the user.

But, uh... I do have a question, if you do not mind. It's about the Word Bump and the school credits. I don't know how long the goods have been down and I know that the developers are BUSY as HELL, but uh... are they ever going to be fixed? XD;;; Or... is this part of a grander plan? O_o (Just kidding on the last part. XD)

... so I keep bending 'til I break.
