only mine was a 1 day 1st aid course... which while fascinating was also exhausting.
I've discovered I've only got the stamina to keep up 1 person cpr for about 4 mins...
me health just isn't enough for more without hurting myself.
I think if i end up doing cpr the person will spend as much time on their side while i rest as being worked on.... that or someone else handles compressions while I breathe and I was so exhausted when i got back I crawled back in bed and slept for another 3 hours...
I wish mum was home. I'd've liked to discuss it with her... all the new stuff i mean.
I didn't know that cpr by itself can pull in just enough air to keep a system ticking over. Breathing for them after 30 compressions is better but it can be done without if u don't know the person and don't want to risk catching something cause u don't got the protective stuff with you. It's now the same no for everyone as well.
2 breaths. 30 C's in a cycle of five, then stop to check if breathing. if not start over again. For straight C's u do 150 straight up, the check. No more messing about with pulses and E A R... if they not breathing and the air way is clear, BANG straight into it.
if u need a rest or the are breathing onto their side they go, a 3 min break is all u can have though, cause they start losing brain cells after that.
We briefly covered heavy bleeding, allergic shock, near drowning and such though i want to practice my rolling into side sleep position. also covered what to do with chocking... hynlick (or however u spell it) maneuver is totally out as are tourniquets ... to much potential to screw up.
Now we get to stick fingers in their mid rife and pound them on the back to make 'em cough. ^_^
Also the technique for approaching and checking response is different... call em by name, mate/ sir/ma'am otherwise. allowed to squeeze the shoulders but no shaking. if you're not sure of them approach from the head and place 2 fingers on the forehead above the eyes.... that'll keep 'em flat long enough for u to scarper if need be. Still no response you clap loudly in front of their face. (they may no speak English) no response... ask if they can squeeze your hand. Still no response start the check airways bit... DR ABCD alllllll the waaaaaaaaaayyyyy.
Check response for ruggies is different. for them it's a nail on the bottom of the foot, a finger in their hand or stroke their cheek. For them, the breath is less than a puff and to fingers doing the massaging as fast as you can do it without pushing to hard. Their pulse and stuff is twice ours cause there's less blood to get the oxygen around the blood.
Also found that if u can't get whatever is trapping someone off in 30 don't get it off till the midico's arrive cause otherwise the poison int the trapped blood when released will trigger a heart attack... got to play with a defibrillator as will.
That's enough for now... I'm still tired.
