Chapter 16
Dannen
I breathed in deeply and sighed. The air felt cooler here than the hot desert air. I felt the soft grass beneath my feet and almost missed the hot sand. The clan lived on the border between the Great Sahara and the plains, though I preferred the desert. The small vixen gazed at me with large brown eyes. I felt her curiosity boring into me. “What do you want?” I sighed. She hadn’t realized that I had noticed her and was startled.
“I was wondering why you stay with us instead of running away.” She looked embarrassed.
“The bird-woman took me from my clan and they deserted me to her. There would be no escape for me anyway.”
“So you are abandoning hope?”
“Well it is my name, my destiny to abandon hope; such is my name, Dannen.”
“So that’s it? Your whole life will be abandoning hope? So what will my destiny be then, flowerpots? You are dumb enough to believe all that?!? My name is Hachi-ko, and ya better believe that it’s not going to change MY life!” her angry outburst astonished me.
“Hachi-ko, I admire your stubbornness, but your stupidity will be your downfall.” The vixen snorted and stalked off.
