So, I've been replaying Gold Version for Game Boy Color and have noticed plenty of level inconsistencies. What are they, you ask? Let's see... where to begin?
First off, Gym Leader Falkner has a Level 9 Pidgeotto. Yeah, those things are supposed to evolve at LEVEL 18. I've run into a couple of Fishers with Level 10 Gyarados. ...I kid you not. Level freaking 10. And what level do Magikarps evolve at? 20. WTF?!
And, I've discovered the most powerful Pokemon in the entire game that can be used against the Gym Leaders of Johto:
Geodude.
Yes, Geodude, a weak little Rock/Ground type that has appeared in every game to date. How is this little guy a PokePowerhouse, if you will?
*Falkner: Rock>Flying. That and its Rock-type affinity makes it strong to Pidgey and Pidgeotto's Normal-type attacks.
*Bugsy: Rock>Bug and Flying dealing Scyther quadruple damage.
*Whitney: Rock-types generally have pretty good Defense and are strong to Normal-type attacks. Best to use something else against Rollout, though.
*Morty: Thank goodness abilities weren't around back then. Ground>Poison. A few good, strong Magnitude attacks can fell even Morty's Gengar.
*Chuck: Well, you can't win 'em all. Not good to use it here, 'specially since Chuck has a Poliwrath.
*Jasmine: Ground>Steel and Electric. Plus, Ground-types are immune to Electric type attacks.
*Pryce: Another not-so-good-match-up. Ice-types and Water-types are strong against Ground-types.
*Clair: Not the best idea, but it's worth a shot. High defense, and all. Just don't use it against Kingdra. Trust me.
So, yeah, 5/8 ain't bad. For speedsters who wanna get through the first 8 gyms relatively quickly, I recommend you nab one of these, then get a surfer, a flyer, and an HM user, and you're good to go.
