If you can't tell by the lack of updates on these OMFGameStop Edition, I have been "unofficially" let go of but I do run in every once in a while...... well at least not to my old GS. The last time I was there I pulled my reservation for Mercs 2 and put it at the one in the mall where I work. Well they had a Street Fighter IV Tourny and I reluctantly entered it. I was on my way to work at Spencer's (oh by the way, I now work at Spencer's Gifts and have been there for a year and a few months) early because I forgot my DS at work (twice I have done this and twice I feel so weird waiting at the bus with nothing to do) and I ran into one of my old customers telling me that it was that day. Well I went in and was planing on hanging out and watching the other people play and not entering at all. But after 15 minutes of "Oh come on Will, you should enter. You don't know how well you will do." I entered just to shut them up.
Like I said, I had no interest in entering because I had a feeling that it was going to go on for way to long. It was going to start at 2 in the pm and I had to go in at 5 so there was no way I was going to enter just to have to leave and give someone a automatic V. Another reason is because, while I do play the game for fun, the vast majority of the people that entered are pros so there was no way I wanted to go up against those people. Well it came time for the tourny to start and alot of people that entered had left so many people got to advance due to disqualification. So it came time for me to play and I was thinking I wasn't even going to try because I knew I was going to lose so why even bother. Come to find out my opponent sucks just like me so it was novice vs novice and that was the only real battle because of the whole unbalanced system at which they had players. instead of having qualifying matches to determine HOW to place the opponents they just had a draw to determine who you went up against. Way to go Corporation, you couldn't fail any harder. Oh wait they did, but more on that later. stressed .
So like I said, I went up against a novice player and it was a really great match. He beat me one match and I came back and beat him three times in a row to advance me to the second fight. My next opponent failed to stick around to that's a automatic V for me and moved me into the finals. So in the finals round it was Me/Ryu/novice vs The Dude/Ryu/pro and in the end, he swept me all three rounds but I didn't go out without a fight. Yes he beat me but in one round, I nearly had him and in the others I at least got him down to half life. But yeah, due to me making it to the finals I get to go on to Round 2 on the 28th..... but there is a dark cloud on that.
So yes, like I said, the rules of the tourny is as follows: Single elimination, best of 5 matches, 99 second time limit, clone matches are aloud (i.e. Ryu vs Ryu, C. Viper vs C.Viper), default characters only. If a double K.O. is to occur in the final match then best of 5 would start over again. Now here is the B.S. part: No button configs are aloud so if you are use to playing they way you have it set up then your pretty much S.O.L. But at the same time, it did keep the playing field *ahem* "even".
So since I did make it to the finals I got a red bandanna that had Ryu on one end and the SFIV logo on the other, a SFIV wristband and a certificate that grants me passage to Round 2. The guy who beat me got a yellow bandanna that had the same thing but on the other end of his had GameStop Grand Champion, wristband, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li official movie poster, Street Fighter IV display poster and a certificate to the Round 2. Now I so want to go but I can't because, A, I have to work that day and B, I'm only getting 10 hours this week so I can't afford any time off of work scream . This is a once in a life time chance and I HAVE to miss it because of shitty scheduling. Oh well, not a bad turn out for someone who didn't want to enter if you ask me but it still would have been nice to see how far I go. 3nodding
