Trust me
Take my hand

Life was good. The Treaty had smoothed things over since it was signed, making his job as Alpha a hell of a lot easier. Shamus shuddered, thinking about the fighting that happened had him spooked now. A small comforting noise calmed his nerves; Amber. He shifted slightly to look at her curled up in his arms, smiling at him.Baby, what’s wrong? She reached her arm up, putting her palm flush against the side of his face. He turned his head to kiss her hand, inhaling deeply, memorizing yet again how his mate smelled.

“Nothing’s wrong. Just thinking,” She shook her head, moving to sit beside him, instead of in his lap. Amber looked away, the tactic she always used to get Shamus to talk. It always worked. “Okay. Sorry love.” He grabbed her shoulders, lifting her up with ease so that she sat, knees on either side of him, essentially straddling him. “Just thinking about how things used to be. And the difference of things compared to now.” She smiled, turning his brain to mush. Apparently, Amber thought the worst of whatever he was thinking about, as she usually did. Sometimes she was right, other times, it got kind of annoying. He loved her for it regardless. Reaching up to hold the back of her head with one hand, he placed the other at her waist, pulling her in for a kiss.

Just then his phone went off. A vibrating accompanied by probably one of the single most annoying tones he’d ever heard. They both sighed. Shamus was willing to let it go to voicemail, whoever was calling would understand if he explained he was preoccupied with Amber, but she had other plans. He watched her reach into his pocket, smirking as she took her time. Maybe it would go to voicemail. But no, Amber answered his phone, the smile dropping from her face as whoever was on the other end gave her his message.

“Thanks, baby, what’s wrong?” He took the phone from her, watching concernedly at how she buried her face in her hands. If he wasn’t mistaken, she started crying soon after he asked the person on the other end what happened. The phone almost dropped from his hands. Shamus sat there, soon to be wife astride him, in shock.

“Marshall’s dead.” Were the only words, quiet whispers from the cell phone save the soft crying coming from Amber and heavy breathing from the Alpha wolf.

Now you’re safe
I promise
