The fog that slithered through the moist, cold air was thicker than molasses. It definitely wasn’t the ideal condition for flying however, since there was no rush to get to the destination, the ship silently and without haste, glided through the sky. Many of the crewmembers were below the deck tossing and turning in their sleep. Now being the turn of the century, the airship had been built to accommodate crewmembers a bit more easily. One bunk, two workers per room was much more comfortable then when they were all stuffed into one floor sleeping in hammocks. At the front of the ship was a lantern that flashed around to see if anything could be seen out of the thick fog. But the light was short lived for it had been turned off for safety measures. Many dangerous criminals and thieves liked to fly in this weather. Inside the ship near the control room, heavy footsteps were heard thumping against the metal floor.
The source was from a bulky, muscular man with rather messy raven hair and rugged clothing stained with oil. In his mouth there was a cigar being held in place between his slightly crooked teeth. His gloves were made of thick brown leather and his overalls were a burgundy color though the stains are what helped create that. Once the behemoth had finished stomping around and arrived at the control room, he raised his large muscular arm and gently tapped on the steel of the doorway.
“Captain? It’s me.” He called in a husky but somewhat shy voice.
In the control room the captain turned in the chair to face the doorway. “Hey Flood come on in!” a low, raspy voice replied in a rather chipper mood.
The giant opened the door and looked around quietly. “Have you been here all morning?” he asked closing the door behind him and standing next to the captain who had turned back to stare out the large glass window.
“Sure have…I usually wake up early if I pass out early so I figured when I woke up this morning that I might make use of myself and give Yoki a few hours off. Plus a big fella like you needs some beauty sleep and I don’t need a boy like Yoki steering in this sort of weather.”
“That wasn’t necessary, I like steering and you know I can handle this sort of fog.” Flood replied playing with his hat in his hands. “But I appreciate you letting me sleep in. After all last night was a bit…What’s the word I’m looking for?” he asked scratching his chin.
“Amazing, fun, enchanting, delicious?” the captain replied.
“Loud…Ugh I barely got any rest. Captain I’m not much of a drinker and these crewmembers are always forcing their drinks down me…How am I supposed to focus on work when you let them party all the time?” Flood muttered rubbing his head. The captain shrugged.
“Sorry about that chap. But since business hasn’t been picking up lately the crew’s needed some motivation to keep them going. And I’ve well…I’ve just been needing some alcohol.” She cackled.
Flood sat in the chair in front of the control panel where the navigator usually sat. His frame was way too large for the thing but the chair seemed to hold strong. “It says here we’re not far from Shanghai.” Flood mentioned pointing to the map which was rotating while a small copper needle traced the current pathway in black ink over it. The captain glanced down from the window and nodded. “ We should be there in a few hours." she replied.
