Samael - The Black Dragon
Drake and Gavin travel up towards the Eastern Mountains. Drake has told Gavin everything about his dragon side and the true reason he wants to find the dragons, to learn more about himself and his biological family. Gavin readily agrees to help him. As they travel, though, they meet a Specter who has disguised itself as Elan. Gavin wants to trust Elan but Drake quickly realizes something is wrong when she is also as happy to see him. Even though they'd only know each other a day and had hardly spoken, she treats him like an old friend as well. He calls her on it, saying that she is not really Elan and refusing to let Gavin follow her. Caught, the Specter reveals itself, and in answer to their question of where another dragon is, tells them to go back to their black day. They decide to return to the Black Forest, knowing that the witches will leave Drake alone. As the Specter said, they find a dragon there. A black dragon, very strong and very proud. He breaths black fire and is the most evil of the remaining dragon race. When they ask about the dragon Adalinda that the water dragon spoke of, the black dragon, Samael, tells Drake that Adalinda was a traitor, showing compassion and even love for the human race who sought to destroy her own race. She'd committed an unforgivable crime by mating with a human man and conceiving a child. Her punishment was for the father and child both to burn in black fire. The father had been killed on the spot, but she hid the egg so that the child would live. As the story is told to Drake and Gavin, two things becomes apparent: that this dragon is talking as if he is the judge and jury of the race, and that the black dragon does not know Drake is Adalinda's child. Sensing this, they thank Samael for the information and quickly leave, taking his warning that should Drake develop too deep a compassion for his human toy, the same fate would befall him. (To be exiled and his human companion burnt alive.)
