A random collection of my thoughts
The Vodka Example
In an attempt to curb drunken driving suppose we were to ban vodka and all alcohol more than 60 proof (30% ABV). You can have any other hard liquor as long as it's not above 60 proof and as long as it's not vodka. You can have rum, bourbon, gin, but vodka is off limits. Does that sound like legislation that's really going to stop drunk driving?

But if it saves just one life we have to try.

Will that really save a life? We can't tell, but to me it doesn't really sound like it.

This is why the assault weapons ban won't work. What counts as an "assault weapon" according to Feinsteins ban is just a few cosmetic features that don't change the function or lethality of a gun. Some models were actually banned by name too. In this case the AR-15 is the vodka. Unless I'm mistaken Feinstein's new ban restricts the AR-15 model where the 1994 ban only banned it if it had features.

The Ruger Mini 14 is not banned. It fires the same cartridge as an AR-15, it's semi automatic so it fires at the same speed, and it uses detachable mags so it has the same potential magazine capacity as an AR-15. This is the rum. It's not banned, but it's every bit as effective as the contraband.

New models of semi automatic rifles will also be legal as long as they don't have one of the "military" features. Yeah military features on a gun is a joke though. That's just their way of saying it looks scary.
