I've been living in this apartment with my grandfather for over 5 years now. He's getting on in his age and needs someone to take care of him. When we moved in we got internet through a local ISP. I don't even remember who the old provider was. Anyway we rented a cable modem from them for $5 a month. It's a small price but I told him it would add up over time. I told him after a year to a year and a half the modem would pay for itself. He just shrugged it off and said it wasn't that big a deal.
So here we are 5 and a half years later. He wants to find a new ISP we can get internet through for less. I mentioned the modem rental. At $5 a month that rental comes to $60 a year and having rented it for over 5 years he has paid more than $300 for it. The most expensive cable modem I could find on google shopping cost $180 but most of them were $60 or less.
So now he's pretty upset that they scammed him. He wants them to give him a cheaper internet rate and let him keep the modem without further rental payment. That's not going to happen. He agreed to pay the rental fee so it's his own fault.
"I told you so" doesn't fix anything. It won't get his money back. I just wish he had listened. I knew this would happen.
