Dottie took me to meet one of her other professors today, Dr. Doby. Dottie has him for physics class, and she had a paper to hand in to him, so we went together to his office. Dr. Doby is a charming old man with wispy white hair and a slight frame. His one leg is gimpy, so he walks with a cane, yet he is surprisingly agile. His cane bears mentioning, as it is a beautiful mahogany with a gold handle in the shape of a rose about to bloom.
We weren’t planning to stay long, only to drop off the paper, but Dr. Doby said I reminded him of his daughter. So, he begged us to stay and chat while he brewed a pot of tea with an old coffee maker. We couldn’t say no, especially after hearing the story of how his daughter had died at an early age due to a failing heart. The conversation did not remain so gloomy, however, as he inquired about our classes and other interests. Particularly, he wanted to know about our experiences with gaiamancy. I couldn’t help thinking this was an unusual topic for a phyisist to be interested in. After we had finished drinking our tea, we said good-bye to Dr. Doby. Dottie later joked that it was too bad I didn’t have him for a class, because I’d have a guaranteed A.
