Legend of the 'Mothman' creature and my theory.
My brother was watching a mystery TV show, and I saw a part about sightings of a creature described as half bird, half man, oddly enough refferred to as 'Mothman' just because Batman was popular in the 60's. ;P

I decided to do just a little research on the Mothman because it seemed pretty interesting. I came up with a theory. It doesn't disprove the Motman's existance or anything. Just a theory.

The sightings of the Mothman of West Virginia first began on November 12, 1966.
5 men in a graveyard reported seeing a "brown human being" (Hehe...) jump from a tree and glide over their heads with giant wings. This was only the first of over 100 sightings.

For over a year, people were reporting sightigs of the Mothman. The most common description; "A skinny gray/brown human being. About 5-6 feet tall with big brown wings and owl-like talons, (On the TV show, the person said dinosaur rex claws. <3).

But no matter what people said the Mothman looked like in terms of height or body shape, it's always been reported with big, glowing, red eyes at about shoulder level. The most common image:

Portrayed as something like an owl. Or a bat if you see other pictures.People reported seeing it going in and out of a power plant that had recently been shut down: the perfect hiding spot for a monster.

No one knew exactly why the Mothman came to West Virginia, but after the Silver Bridge tragedy, in which the Silver Bridge collapsed into the lake below and 46 people were killed, people believed that the Mothman came to warn them of what was to happen. Apparently after the accident, the Mothman was never seen again.

--------------------------------------------------

Now, a lot of people that I love stories and myths like this. Along with Greek mythology and all that. And this is no exception. Anyways, here's my theory.
(It's a lot shorter than the story.)

I think the Mothman was just some hoax pulled off by some teengaers. Or even the men who first reported it. That's how a lot of these things get started. From the descriptions I've read/heard, the Mothman seems like it would make a great cosplay or something. ;D
One description went somethign along the lines of "like a man with wings, and big red eyes, just like bike reflectors". I think that it's just that. A tall man in a furry suit hunched over with cardboard wings on the back with bike reflectors near the shoulders. If you look at the picture provided above, it looks like an owl, as I've stated. There are some fairly large owls in that area, people who had heard stories of the mothman could've seen an owl and let their minds exagerate. I think the biggest bird in America has a wingspan of 6-7 feet.

Anyways, when I heard that the Mothman was never seen again after the Silver Bridge tragedy, the thought came right to me: Whoever was responsible for this was among the 46 people who's lives were taken in the tradgedy. And since there was no one else to carry on the legend, it slowly died away. Well at least the sightings did. There is a statue in West Virginia of the Mothman. (It looks like Megaman mixed with a moth, instead of a bird which it was originally described as.)

Well, that's my theory. Hope it made sense. I bet none of you will even read it. ;P
I don't blame you.

That's pretty cool actually. Myths are cool. I like the one where someone say I said something smart. I've been investigating for years now, but the closest I came was when I was when I was playing Runsescape, so it doesn't count
