Well, I didn't want to, but today I flew to the ocean, leaving the ponds and lakes around here in the care of a few dryads. They generally don't look after ponds or
lakes, but since most of them are surrounded by forest, the dryads will usually make sure everything is going well in the surrounding area, if not exactly inside.
I took an hour to fly to the ocean, which thankfully was on the other side of the wood. I generally don't like going there; being a freshwater sprite, I prefer being away from choking, confining salt air and water. In order to call out the saltwater sprites, though, I have to go under for at least a minute. I hate this the most.
As I arrived at the ocean, I was relieved to see no people were around. It wasn't raining, so they couldn't have seen me anyway, but I don't like taking the chance. I've been caught in sudden downpours before without warning. I flew out to a spot farther out in the ocean and stuck my head underneath. Immediately, I was overwhelmed by the awful salt. I managed to gargle a "Merissa calling to the ocean sprites! Hello!" before pulling my head back up and shaking the salt free from my hair. After a moment, three thin and elegant sprites with fishtails flew up from the water, fluttering their finlike wings in the air.
This is why I don't like visiting the ocean sprites much. They make me feel inferior just by their appearances alone.
The three of them spent a moment glancing me up and down before the first one, with pale blue skin and hair like an iridescent white pearl, spoke with me, her pale lips curled upward slightly with distaste. Her name was Lowne, and she was the most vain and unpleasant sprite of them all.
"Yes?" she asked. "What do you want?" I braced myself for an unpleasant discussion.
