• Shall smiles never fade away to sorrow?
    Blissful faces and ringing voices too?
    But alas such do not come the ‘morrow
    And that laughter, so sweet in note and hue,
    Fades to but a memory so far past:
    Lurking in those forgotten thoughts of thine
    Bringing stifled tears; so bitter they last;
    Never truly gone, and always haunting
    How hath memories so delightful fade,
    And twist anguish along ye broken way?
    O, a smile now a two-edged blade
    And voices echoing as thou do gray
    Yes, those smiles do fade away and dwindle,
    Whilst blissful faces never rekindle.
