• She walked through the trees, the sky black. There was no star to be seen, just the sliver of white moon shining. She came across a small pond in a clearing. The moonlight reflected off it, and gave it a silver glow. She walked towards the pond and brushed a lock of dark brown hair behind her ear. She stooped over the water and saw her face. She didn't like it. The reflection shimmered. It became a new image, a beautiful picture of herself, the way she wanted to look. She had longer, wavier hair, wider eyes, a slightly smaller nose, larger lips. Her face was clear and nicely tan-the way it was in the summer. She smiled at herself, and the reflection smiled with perfectly straight, white teeth. From all angles, the reflection was perfect. She reached toward the surface of the water and the reflection did the same. The image rippled and the reflection disappeared. She sighed. She slowly lifted her head and began walking out of the forest. In the distance, she could hear the chirping of crickets. As she left the clearing and entered the forest, she thought she heard the soft crackling of pine needles . She knew it was just her own footsteps, but she felt frightened anyway. A cloud passed over the moon, blocking what little light shone through the trees. As she continued to walk, she heard the footsteps again. She stopped abruptly, and realized that the noise was not coming from her own feet. She began to run, more frightened than ever. There were only about 20 yards left until she was in the open, where any animal following her would be afraid to leave the forest. As she arrived at the edge of the woods, she was stopped by the silhouette of a person of her own height. The wind rustled the trees, making the person's long, wavy hair flow. The cloud passed over the moon, and the person's identity was revealed: it was her, only...not her. The person had longer, wavier hair. She had wider eyes, a slightly smaller nose, larger lips. Her face was clear and nicely tanned. The person smiled at her with perfectly straight, white teeth. The reflection reached out toward her and put her hand behind her back. She screamed. An intensely painful stab followed her scream, right where the reflection's hand was on her back. The reflection let o of the knife and ran away, her feet making no noise on the ground. In the distance, there was a splash from the silver pond. She blacked out.
