• Feather

    - one of the horny structures forming the principal covering of birds

    ---

A single feather as white as snow.

She had found it on her windowsill one night, the moonlight giving it an ethereal glow.

It reminded her of the wings of a pure white dove, or perhaps even the wings in the portraits of angels.

Purity and freedom. That was what wings symbolized to her.

She had placed the fragile thing on her nightstand, and that was where it had remained ever since.

A single feather as white as snow.

One night, she dreamt that she grew massive, pure white wings out of her shoulder blades.

She could feel in all her heart, that now she was as pure as an angel, as free as a dove. That now, she could finally spread her wings and soar above the clouds.

And so she stood upon a tall cliff in her dreams, spread her arms and her wings, felt the wind blow in her hair - and jumped.

    She was flying.

They found her body on the asphalt beneath her window, her back covered in hundreds of blood-stained white feathers.

In her hand, they found a single, lonely feather, seemingly more fragile than the rest.

A single feather as white as snow.
