• Not too long ago a girl came up to me.
She called my name and asked if I would listen to her plea.

I shrugged and said sure, why not?
    What harm could it do?
And right there and then she dropped to her knees
And broke down right in front of me.

I wasted no time, asked her what was wrong,
But she just shook her head.
Said no, even if I told you, you would not believe me.

I told her to try me.
Go on, I was her friend, I’m always here to help.
Your hero, I joked, the peacemaker.
    Your faithful mutt.

    Still she sat there
    Crying to no end.
My arms went around her and she stood up
And we walked together to the edge.

Soon afterwards on one fateful mornings eve,
I rolled out of bed to wonder why my phone had beeped at me.

It was there I heard the words
To this day, I wish I’d never heard.
Housed in that little piece of today’s technology
Was a message I’ll never forget.

    It was a farewell,
    So long, good-bye,
    Thank you; hope you’re well.
    But as of this moment
    I hope you never forget
That a part of you has just died.

    And now it is me
Weeping on those knees like the stray dog I am.
Unable to accept the fate of that dear friend.

    She left me a good-bye,
Closed with those three words everyone knows so well.
And just before the click, as her clock ticked,
She told me to do something for her.

She told me to pass the word on,
    But do not feel sorrow.
Instead, keep on living with the lives you’ve been given
And accept them to the end.

Do not end up like me she said.
I have given my last hoo-rah.
The excitement of my life has gone
And it is never to return again.

And so I continue on, fighting for those in need.
This stray dog would take on the world
With all the fire in his eyes
    And never once back down.

This stray dog will forever fight on,
    Ever since that last good-bye.
With fire in his eyes, fight he will
To the very end if it so takes him.

He lives in memory of that pain,
    Wishes for it never again.
That stray dog forever fighting to avoid it
As he does his best to live life to the fullest.

But in this dog did form the sorrow
Which has unleashed his weaker side.
He masks the side, and promises to all
    He’d give his life as an example to others;

He’d give it as their reason to stay alive.
