Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Twenty: ?uestlove
Okay. I'm pretty tired. It was a crazy Thursday and now I'm ready to smash some GCDers take a break. My over-hyped feature was finally revealed, and it actually created more of a hub-bub than I anticipated. So here's the breakdown of what's going on:

What is your Quest?
The biggest news today of course is the release of the Quest System which has sparked fires all around Gaia. The basics first...

The Quest System currently features one Quest: The New User Quest which old users are allowed to take because it would be the biggest rip-off ever if they couldn't.

So they did, and they annihilated the Welcome to Gaia forum until we funneled them into their own thread (which annihilated the forums altogether because, apparently, you DON'T want 12,000 users all posting in the same thread in a 3 hour period. Who could have possibly known?)

Anyway, the general reception of the Quest System was good, bugs aside (which were in large part due to unforeseen database pummeling), until it came to the topic of old Monthly Collectibles (MCs).

Gaian Civil War
Now that the Quest System is a reality and Phase Two is coming up, users are asking the question: should Monthly Collectibles be available through the Quest System?

On the one hand you have the Oldbies who feel that MC's are a badge of their longevity; the rich Gaians who feel that their tremendous investment entitles them to exclusivity for all time; and the elitists who feel that people shouldn't be allowed a different way to work hard for MC's (for some reason).

On the other hand you have the Gaians who are sick of the unattainability of MCs, who were too young to buy them when they came out, or who can't spend $2.50 for a small cluster of carefully organized pixels.

What I say right now is... I don't care! We haven't even started Phase Two yet, so no REAL decisions have been made regarding this issue.

We're going to make the decision that we think will be the most fun for the most users and have the best long-term effect on Gaia.

It's Not My Fault!
It's these guys' faults too! I wasn't the only who worked on the Quest System, and if you liked it, all of these people deserve your praise:
Round of applause!

2 Months for this Piece of Crap?!
Contrary to what some may think, Quest System is a sophisticated little chunk of software. It allows us to make quests out of any action on the site and any future actions we ever choose to support. Not too shabby! If you can dream it, it can be made into a quest now.

I started a thread with answers to common questions about Quests here

Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey
Another cool thing that happened this week was the release of the new DIs MCs.

Personally, I think Momo is too cute and will be wearing him as soon as my donation letter arrives.

The spaceship has had a lukewarm reception, but I think Gaians are just underestimating the potential of that alien technology ninja

Gaian Complaint #23982993417: Fixes, not Features!
There's a common complaint I see around Site Feedback and GCD that goes something like this:

Joe User
The devs should stop making new features and events and stuff, and spend more time fixing the site! EVERYTHING's broken ALL the time!

I have a couple things to say about this:

(A) If EVERYTHING was broken ALL the time, you wouldn't have been able to post your complaint rofl

(B) We can do both. The people who write and draw and run NPCs for the site aren't always the people who can code and fix bugs on the site.

(C) We're spending a couple of months working on a bug-fixing cycle - overhauling some old features, fixing bugs in others, and working on just a small set of new things.

We're not stupid (though sometimes it seems otherwise) and we know the site can't continue to grow if it keeps breaking. It's just a bad idea. But the scope of Gaia and the amount of old code makes it difficult to catch everything.

And as soon as we think we've got it down, another 10,000 users log on at the same time and prove us wrong.

So long story short: Yeah. We know. We're trying. We have a great team now and we're all getting better and better at what we do. I know most of you complain because you want Gaia to be all it can be -- but so do we (it's just that when we complain, it usually means a lot more work!)

OLD NEWS: The funniest thing I've seen all week

The only thing I would like to point out is that not every "Oldbie" (damn, but I hate that term) is getting irate about the possibility of old MCs in the quest system. I think it would be nice to give new people a chance, no matter how small and hard, to get some of those items, it would also let people like me get back some of them because we were silly and sold them off a long time ago before they skyrocketed in price.

To summerize: Not every "Oldbie" is a crochety elitest b*****d, not every new person is an ignorent n00b, do what you want and I will support you

Gaian Complainer #23982993417 was clearly not here back in the days of 2003 and 2004 where the site crashed almost once a week 3nodding

Now you get Fruity's Official Input on the QUEST SYSTEM.
Reaction #1: Ooooo Quest System. Look! the admins finally released a feature they said they were going to release back in the day!

Reaction #2: Sooooooooooo slooooooooooow *Walks in slow motion due to lag*

Reaction #3: "OMG THEY'RE SHOVING N00B STUFF DOWN MY TH-" *Force fed. Dies* x_X

Reaction #4: ANOTHER FREAKING OCEAN BLUE HEAD WRAP?! stressed I GET ENOUGH OF THESE FROM DAILY CHANCE!

Reaction #5: I seem to be tuck in an endless cycle of shopping sprees. I think Moria's plotting something.

Reaction #6: *Quits Quest because of Reaction #5*

Reaction #7: Wait, I canceled that quest so why is Moria still telling me I completed a step?

Reaction #8: SHE'S STALKING ME gonk

>>;; In other words; Once all the bugs are patched up and this feature can handle massive amounts of Gaians abusing it, the Quest System may very well end up being one of Gaia's best features.

Yeah, so there's my input. You know you enjoyed it whee *Gives Fleep a box of oranges to pelt at rampaging users in self-defense.*

I really appreciate the Quest System. Really. I can't wait to see some backwings or whatever.

However, I don't see how you talk about oldbies in that way. If people hadn't joined back in '03 and stayed, Gaia wouldn't be where it is today. I'm really dissapointed if that's the tone you're going to take with oldbies who have real concerns about this Quest System.

I enjoyed your journal greatly. It's a shame people can't appreciate the amount of work that goes into developing any site, especially one as large as GAIA. I bow humbly before the staff, and I thank you all for the work you do for all of us! And yeah, that pic....HILARIOUS! "HALT!" Mad Props, Fleep, mad props! wink

Personally, I love the idea... for someone like myself, it will potentially afford me the chance to spend my gold on friends, and maybe earn the items I quest for, while being nicer to the people I care for, or think are worthy.

The quest system is awesome! I would love to see the old MC/DI released again through the quest system. I don't get those with the * I have mine but you can't have yours* attitude. Anyone who quests for something knows that by the time you've reached your goal and go to purchase the item, it's gone up another 60k+. There are alot of people like me who do not create quest threads or beg for gold and items that would be esstatic to be able to use the quest system.

I hope Gaia disappoints those who do not want old MC/DI items released. It would surely teach them that those who work hard for something deserve to have it just as much as they do. As such is true in life.

Love the suspence and drama leading up to the release. Kudos to you, that was fun!User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
The new comic update was hilarious! I enjoyed it very much.
I love the new MC items. heart I had iceketch make me a UFO a few weeks back and was surprised by the UFO item release. I can't wait to see what this hummer will really do!!

Yeah yeah, I've read the thread.. lol

I think you and the others made what I hope will be a fun and excellent (everything else is, after all) game. By the time I logged in, both the announcement "Quests are here!" and the sub-announcement "Quests are FUBAR!" were up, so I've not seen it yet. I LOVE the games we have now.. I remember when all I could play was fishing and maybe a few rolls at the slot machine.. I'm amazed by how many leaps and bounds this site has grown.. and now, thanks to my wonderful husband, we're supporters too! -glee!-

My husband donated ten dollars this month, secretly sending letters to my account and to the other wife's account (polyamorist). When the items were released, I told him one was a monkey and he ran - and I mean RAN - over to see what it looked like, how it could be posed, etc.. he's a big monkey freak. whee

Needless to say, the man that used to grouse that we wanted to spend good money on useless pixels is VERY happy with his little investment into our happiness and has got to watch us spend the last day and a half act like a pair of schoolgirls trying out all the poses with our outfits/other items, then showing them (at high-decibel level) what they looked like.

I love my little monkey.. and my little IFO.. -clutches both and hisses at any who dare stand too close-

It's a site that's still in alpha. The userbase is a bunch of glorified testers. Thins are going to be buggy until they're tested 'live' and then fixed. Nothing that can be done about it.

I appreciate this new feature, and know that it will turn out to be entertaining in the long run. Keep up the good hard work.

Ah, I forgot my input on donations in the Quest System.

I'm an oldbie, an 03er at that, and you know what? I say go for it. Put in then in a special monthly quest so EVERYONE has a chance at getting them. I understand where some people are coming from, but you know, sealed letters are just too expensive, and some people can't donate or aren't willing to spend REAL money on PIXELS. This way, everyone has a shot at it.

ALL Admins and Mods: People will complain no matter what, just ignore em and do whatever your little hearts desire 3nodding

P.S: yes, the PS3 is a ripoff. GO NINTENDO!! xd

The quest system looks like it will be very fun in the future! Good job!

As for giving out MCs for people who finish the quest I really don't think it's a good idea. [Please don't judge me 'cause I am an oldbie.] But, think about it... aren't you going to lose a lot of donations that way?

Personally i hope the decicion isn't to take the donation items out of the quest system
some people have relied on that being true for years

03 Items are for everyone, everyone can already earn em, 03 users dont have a immideaite licence on them, sure they helped build the site when it was new, and contrbitued with donations, but the DI items where never meant to a gold exploiting system, which is all that current 03 donation items are.

(if its senitmental value, then what does it matter if more gets released, your one is still special)

So anyways, I hope they do stick in, for everyones enjoyment

@Fleep, funny journal, always a interesting thing to read since week 1 ^.^

Well, it seems like the new Quest system has shortened my quest by about a year or two...well anyway thank you Fleep, and of course the rest of the dev. who worked hard in making this for us.

And...about the matter of having M.C.s in the quest system...my opinions are neutral. I'm not sure if I should classify myself as a Newbie or an Oldbie. ( I think Oldies should be Oldies, but continuing on...) But I tend to look upon the Newbie's perspective much more. I personally think that donation items Monthly collectibles should be in the Quest system later on...but I wouldn't want to see everybody (newbies and oldies alike) waltzing around adorned with rare angelic and demonic/nitemare items...so I suggest that the Quest system have some more challenging tasks, and a higher gold reward for them instead. But a few monthly collectibles wouldn't hurt. Since rare events aren't as common as they were 2 years ago, it would help with some of the economy.(at the same time there is also a possibility this would send the prices of certain items in the marketplace skyrocketing).

Thanks for reading xD whee

You and your teammates did a great job, and I'm not being sarcastic! It really was fun. Even if it broke, it's still a good feature.

Anyways, I am another one of those sane (or weird?) oldbies who think that MCs should be obtained through the quest system, as long as the market isn't flooded. I do not mind inflation; it is the older items' near-unattainability that bugs me.

Hey Fleep, I just wanted to let you know that not all oldbies are elitist jerks who think that no one but them deserve the old items. I've been here sence november '03 and I think adding the option to attain old MC's in the quest system is a great idea! It gives people who haven't been here for years the chance to enjoy cool old items just like everyone else!
I know you guys, if you decide to do this, will handle it responsibly and not give away Halos on every street corner or something! I'm sure you'll make it so that the quests adiquatly compair to the effort one would put in to gain these items by gold only.

It is also my belief that a new way to add more of the old donation items into the economy is a good thing. With the numbers of old users who actualy possess these items who are quitting, being hacked, or banned, that eventualy there will be few to none of the old items left for people to get even if they DO save the gold to get them.

I myself am questing for a Panda hat and know that they are far and few between when people sell them and am worried that even if I do save that huge amount of gold and items that I won't even be able to find anyone selling the hat anyway. I worry that lots of the old items will be like that too.

I haven't gotten the chance to use the quest system yet, since I was asleep when it first came out and it was taken down by the time I got up but I can't wait to get the chance to play with it. I hope you, and all the other devs and admins keep up the good work and I can't wait for more quests.

Aww kitty fell asleep in his food! ;-; It seems with everything there will always be the critics who spout nonsense like they've written a bible and learned from Ghandi (what an odd combination...). The part I dislike the most is that the voices of complaints are always the loudest, so often the praise is over shadowed.

I thoroughly enjoy this phase one of the project, and look forward to phase two...I feel like I have one of those chocolate board things where you can only open up one door and eat one piece a day, those count down to Christmas things. (Did anyone really ever eat one a day?)

So again, thank you for all your hard work, and I can't wait to see what else is coming up!

I just want to say a few words, and although I don't know if this is the best place for them, or even if they will be read, here is where I'm writing them. Gaia, as a game, is very strange. It's mostly a paper-doll system which is given substance by a mass of overlapping and spam-filled forums. There is a system of economics which is half-way between a static infinitely inelastic "shop" system, and a market place which just about any user can manipulate easily. Gold, as a currency, is infinitely available and continuously devaluing... but still, I continue to "play" Gaia. Of course, it's not all bad. I really don't mean to be a downer. I'm not one of those types of people who would continuously rag on admins/devs just because I don't like how things go. If I ever found myself doing that, I wouldn't be here anymore. So what is it that keeps me coming back? Is it, perhaps, that I feel superior because I'm an "oldbie"? Maybe it's just that I like to see my Gaian "worth" accumulate over time? Could it be the fun story elements? My love for collecting virtual items? My want to show off my supreme sense of avatar style? Really, it's all of these things. This system, which is held together by coffee, cat-5, and code (and more than its fair share of duct-tape), is fun at the core. The fact that Gaia still exists tells me that it isn't just me who feels this way. And because the userbase hasn't ever just vanished, it's safe to say that those at the helm know how to make something which is enjoyable. Now, why and I writing all of this? There are two reasons. Firstly I want to make the point that, while most of the userbase likes to whine and moan, they haven't left yet. You must be doing something right, and although it's hard to gage what certain decisions might yield, the Gaian leadership seems to understand what is fun. Moving toward what is fun is the most important thing to Gaia, I think. Secondly, I want to state my perspective before offering advice. I want to be straightforward with this so you can take what I have to say next at face value. Feel free to do whatever you will with this advice, I'll probably keep coming back to Gaia either way. The quest system is a great idea in my opinion. It gives everyone on Gaia something else to do, and it might even give them a way of gaining items they would never be able to gain otherwise. This rocks! I really have nothing bad to say about this idea, or what I've seen of its implementation so far. The issue I have is that there seems to be some underlying motivation on your part to see that "inflation" is curbed. I put inflation in quotes because when I see users speak of inflation, they're usually talking about appreciation of a specific good, which is a very different thing. The truth is that I bet very few users, especially myself, want to actually see inflation curbed without some specific system which would provide reward for it. Inflation, by definition, is the rise in prices of goods based on the decrease in worth of a currency. In this case, inflation is being caused by the fact that Gaia is filled with an increasingly large amount of gold, and so prices must rise to reflect that. If the leadership wanted to curb inflation, would they have implemented a system that awards all users with more gold per action? Would they continuously create new ways of gaining gold, like the puzzle system? And how would you curb inflation? I very much doubt that re-introducing old items would actually do much to stop this decrease in the value of gold. These items will be more attainable, which is great, but the gold will still be rolling in with each new user that joins, and each action a user performs. No, the only way to curb inflation is to provide mandatory sinks into which user's gold will be funnelled. Examples of this sort of system well known to me inside of World of Warcraft. Armour repair costs, travel costs, material components. Most of these could be instituted in the battle system, perhaps, but not all users of Gaia will make use of that. There would have to be other things as well. Things which a user would have to put their gold into, I just don't really know what they would be. Perhaps a more involved crafting system? Maybe a tax on certain types of transaction? I'm not sure. Basically all I'm trying to say at this point is, although I like the quest system so far, as well as where I think it's heading, I don't think it will make a good system by which to re-value gold. There has to be some other way to do that, and I'm confident that the Gaian admin/dev team will think of it. I also want you to know that while a lot of people are whining and complaining, a lot more people are just quietly happy that that site is here. Thanks, Fleep.

Re-releasing the MC's is the most stupid idea gaia has come up with to date.

Gaia has always been about earning money and buying the item you want, with the reward you saved up for.

If you're going to rerelease them you guys just might as well make every item free so we can all make are avaters pretty and perfect just how we want them, and get rid of the point of gaia. surprised

You guys said you would never mass release the donations.
But you guys are covering you're promise with a "WELL IT'LL BE HARD TO GET OMG SO NO"

Uhm yes.
You're giving everyone the chance of deffinitly getting an 03 MC.
Now dedication is a totally different thing.
But if everyone was dedicated for a halo, and they were all like "WOW IM REALLY DEDICATED" we would have 34783247 halos in 2008.

Which is another thing.
I don't care if they're going to be REALLY HARD QUESTS OMG, you're still giving everyone a chance to get one.
With questing the old way, you could save up for years and not be guarenteed to get that item.
Which made it alot more fun!
Because it gave you an actualy goal.
In this one, if you're dedicated enough, you're 100% going to get the gold at the end of the rainbow.

neutral

You guys literally lied to us.

So you don't even have to release the Battle System.
Alot of us arn't expecting great promises and acheivements coming from gaia anymore.

Please don't ruin your site with a stupid mistake.

...If only it were that simple.

I wish you and all the other wonderful people that worked on the Quest system much luck. Both on continuing the project, and putting up with all the complaints and debate on, well...everything. XD;

P.S. Monkey in Fleep's hair = win. I hope he doesn't start nesting up there. razz

I think, in the future the quest system could be "Da' Shizz" of Gaia.

At least for those who aren't caught up bitchin' boutinthe BS.

I can't wait to get my UFO and start Rollin' round towns.
Something I havean't seen being talked about is UFO races in Towns.

Sure we all walk in the same speed but, there are still ways to go about it!
D:<

P.S. -
That was the most adorable/creepy/wa~y-too-human-looking monkey I have ever seen.

this is directed to [ Elevendy Blue ].

I don't see the problem with giving everyone the chance to get an item if they WORK for it. I have enough confidence in the staff that the quests for these items will not be just a walk in the park like the welcome to Gaia quest.

I've been here since '03 and I worked and scraped for my items after loosing my first account and I have no problem with giving other people the option to get an item they really want.. Why should someone who just joined this month not be allowed the opportunity to get a Devil Tail or and OMG hat just because they didn't discover Gaia before now?

I get tired of people with donation items wanting them to be some kind of "Omg look at me I've been here for a long time and am so cool." Sort of status symbol.. They are just items and even though they are rare and cool I think everyone who works for it should be able to enjoy having them too! It's near impossible to quest for something like a panda hat or Halo these days without it taking upwards of a year or more and while more power to the people who accomplish those quests with gold and items, I think we should have the option of doing it another way.

What does it hurt? YOu're still questing and it's still going to take work, dedication, and effort.

I busted out laughing SO bad, when I clicked your 'hub-bub' link.

I didn't get a chance to check out the QS while it was up, so I don't have any experience with how it wokrs, but I'm sure it's gonna be all sorts of awesome once you guys get it running again. I think it's a cool-a** idea. When I saw the announcement, and read that it was finally the quest system that was being released, ya know what happened? Just like you said, of course. xd

As an 03 "oldbie" who's been donating since my first month, I say GO FOR IT with the re-releasing of MCs. I don't care if it's random, or a long quest, or a short quest, or whatever. There are some cool items that are so expensive... If there's a way to 'quest' for them that is more ... interesting? than whoring the exchange and begging, I'm all for it.

The momo IS the cutest little thing, innit? I am rather partial to that " gonk I'm kneeling on my monkey!" pose, though. sweatdrop

I have to say, that along with numerous other people who were inclined to post here, as I am now, I am all for the re-release of older, unattainable items in the quest system.

I have a handful of those items already, I ought to, I've been here for 3 years, and 3 months.

If they were rereleased in the quest sytem, and assuming that they were introduced into the system so much so as to harm their market price, I would have a total net worth of a lot less.

And to be honest: I'm okay with that.

I LOVE that image.

I keep thinking it every now and then.

XD

I also love all the random word-image links you add XD That baby monkey is uuber adorable!

To find the holy grail... I'm on the side that old MCs should be released... to curb down inflation... still. Not just given out in an easy quest sweatdrop

When I donate this month, I'm gonna get a saucer =3

Huzzah for all the team involved in the questing system! Over some months I'll be giving all of you fanarts =3.

If I have spare enough time... I'll do two this month ^_^
