Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Twenty: ?uestlove
Okay. I'm pretty tired. It was a crazy Thursday and now I'm ready to smash some GCDers take a break. My over-hyped feature was finally revealed, and it actually created more of a hub-bub than I anticipated. So here's the breakdown of what's going on:

What is your Quest?
The biggest news today of course is the release of the Quest System which has sparked fires all around Gaia. The basics first...

The Quest System currently features one Quest: The New User Quest which old users are allowed to take because it would be the biggest rip-off ever if they couldn't.

So they did, and they annihilated the Welcome to Gaia forum until we funneled them into their own thread (which annihilated the forums altogether because, apparently, you DON'T want 12,000 users all posting in the same thread in a 3 hour period. Who could have possibly known?)

Anyway, the general reception of the Quest System was good, bugs aside (which were in large part due to unforeseen database pummeling), until it came to the topic of old Monthly Collectibles (MCs).

Gaian Civil War
Now that the Quest System is a reality and Phase Two is coming up, users are asking the question: should Monthly Collectibles be available through the Quest System?

On the one hand you have the Oldbies who feel that MC's are a badge of their longevity; the rich Gaians who feel that their tremendous investment entitles them to exclusivity for all time; and the elitists who feel that people shouldn't be allowed a different way to work hard for MC's (for some reason).

On the other hand you have the Gaians who are sick of the unattainability of MCs, who were too young to buy them when they came out, or who can't spend $2.50 for a small cluster of carefully organized pixels.

What I say right now is... I don't care! We haven't even started Phase Two yet, so no REAL decisions have been made regarding this issue.

We're going to make the decision that we think will be the most fun for the most users and have the best long-term effect on Gaia.

It's Not My Fault!
It's these guys' faults too! I wasn't the only who worked on the Quest System, and if you liked it, all of these people deserve your praise:
Round of applause!

2 Months for this Piece of Crap?!
Contrary to what some may think, Quest System is a sophisticated little chunk of software. It allows us to make quests out of any action on the site and any future actions we ever choose to support. Not too shabby! If you can dream it, it can be made into a quest now.

I started a thread with answers to common questions about Quests here

Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey
Another cool thing that happened this week was the release of the new DIs MCs.

Personally, I think Momo is too cute and will be wearing him as soon as my donation letter arrives.

The spaceship has had a lukewarm reception, but I think Gaians are just underestimating the potential of that alien technology ninja

Gaian Complaint #23982993417: Fixes, not Features!
There's a common complaint I see around Site Feedback and GCD that goes something like this:

Joe User
The devs should stop making new features and events and stuff, and spend more time fixing the site! EVERYTHING's broken ALL the time!

I have a couple things to say about this:

(A) If EVERYTHING was broken ALL the time, you wouldn't have been able to post your complaint rofl

(B) We can do both. The people who write and draw and run NPCs for the site aren't always the people who can code and fix bugs on the site.

(C) We're spending a couple of months working on a bug-fixing cycle - overhauling some old features, fixing bugs in others, and working on just a small set of new things.

We're not stupid (though sometimes it seems otherwise) and we know the site can't continue to grow if it keeps breaking. It's just a bad idea. But the scope of Gaia and the amount of old code makes it difficult to catch everything.

And as soon as we think we've got it down, another 10,000 users log on at the same time and prove us wrong.

So long story short: Yeah. We know. We're trying. We have a great team now and we're all getting better and better at what we do. I know most of you complain because you want Gaia to be all it can be -- but so do we (it's just that when we complain, it usually means a lot more work!)

OLD NEWS: The funniest thing I've seen all week

But it was fun helping move all of those hundreds of threads out :D

I'm pretty happy about the Quest system, though. I hadn't heard much about it for a while and was starting to wonder if it was just a scrapped idea/rumor gonk

Pfft... stuff isn't broken "ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!111exclamationpoint!!1" They either seem to forget or were not here two years ago when everything was actually broken all the time and Gaia would go down for a few days while whatever the problem was was being fixed. But that's when it was four guys, a girl, and some dangerous looking leftovers that required the use of firearms to tame.

Features took forever then. Homan.

Hey, I'm excited about the QS's potential. I could see so much happening with that. biggrin

p.s. I love the saucers. It's like my ideas are being stolen. gonk

commentCommented on: Fri Nov 17, 2006 @ 09:40am
Well, not oldbies are greedy elitist ********. I won't say how many of the donation items I have, but I really don't care if users can quest to get them (eventually). You know why? BECAUSE SO CAN I!!!!

But I am moar of a collector, so what do I know? emo Admittedly, seeing everyone wear the same damn thing is annoying - which is why I rarely wear items when they're released whee Hell, even Devil Tails kinda annoy me since everyone (*cough*) slaps them on... But I still wear mine lolz TwT;

Anywho, like I've already said, very impressed. Can't wait to see more. Thank you all for finally bringing the quest system to Gaia. No thanks for all the threads we had to get together and move out of WtG though... xd

Great to see the Quest System up and running, glad to see a project that was rumored a long while back up and running. Can't wait to see the progression. I'd say the only thing I'm really disappointed in is that I'd thought in incorporate Towns or be an entirely new flash set-up, like an MMORPG. The NPCs are on the map, they ask you to collect a set number of things and you return them. Whether or not you guys have something like that planned for the future, I dunno, but it's really great as-is.

PS3 rip-off image. xd I take it isn't a Wii for you then? Do you have one pre-ordered or are you lookin' at getting one at a later date?

Alien + Monkey = Love <3

You should deliberatly screw up that persons account so they can't do anything but lurk for a week, and pretend it was a 'accedent' ninja Buuut.. If you could have Gift giving back online by Christmas, i know alot of people would would be very greatful >.< <3

And, im excited about the Quest system >.< If DI's MC's could be a reward for completing a harder task, it'd be AWESOME <3 Cause 12k is alot of gold >>'

Anyway, Keep up the awesome work >.<

The monkey looks adorable on you, if I may say.

SECRETPROJECT =O

It was.. kinda fun... when I took it, despite errors. I guess I'll wait untill a second go before I make a final decision on it.

I wouldn't mind MCs (wow...change) being part of a reward for extremly hard/long/bothersome quests. If you did a lot of work for them, why not?

Very cute monkey. I actually had a lot of fun doing the quest, even as an older user. I like the interactive aspect, and the fact that Moira knows when you do stuff. SHE'S ALWAYS WATCHING! O_O;; But yeah, defnitely a fun feature, and I feel priveleged to have been able to test it.

... and moving all those threads. heart

I had almost completely forgotten about back-wings until I read your thread...
I can't wait to see how Phase 2 will accumilate.

I was always under the impression that Administration told us that the Quest System would be functional in Beta, and the project to be worked on after the Battle System was made.

I guess I was wrong.

commentCommented on: Fri Nov 17, 2006 @ 11:58am
For the record, I fully support the release of MCs through the quest system - I am confident you guys are well aware of their value not only in Gaia gold, but to the morale of the user population. I know you will ensure that the quests are difficult and lengthy, and there is always the possibility of failure, meaning we would have to start over. The items should not be a limited now-and-forever release, or they will eventually disappear altogether. Do I want a halo? No. In fact, my sights are set on ports. If there was a knockoff that looked similar enough, I wouldn't want them at all, so it's not the 20 million gold price tag that's got me spooging over them.
Do I care that in a year's time a bunch of 2006 users may have completed the quest necessary to get a nitemare scarf? Or that the might one day be worth 2k? Hell no. If they're ALL worth 2k, it's not like I'm going to go bankrupt overnight for no reason.

It's all relative. All the super rich people will still be super rich, the numbers just won't be as big.

i wanted to give you and all the people who worked on the project a hug yesterday when i found out it was the quest system. xd though i'd like to thank you for keeping me on the edge of my seat and making me try to think what it was, since i'm fairly sure you're completely responsible for that.

i can't wait for more quests to come out, especially the one's for DIs and the backwings. i realize that the new user quest is for new users and was just released, so i didn't mind the bugs and slight boringness of it. (Moira kept telling me to buy stuff from Rufus)

i like the ufo, but i'm a scifi nut. you should go around Town's as the little ufo and see if anyone notices who you are. ninja

Just wanted to say thank you for putting a lot of the concerns I had about the Quest System to rest. Despite the fact you were the one who headed (I'm guessing, anyway.) development of the Quest System, you responded well to my title and replied calmly to my thread, despite the fact it was one of the only ones at the time, if not THE only one saying that it sucked.

Yes, I'm publicly saying that my speculation in the GCD about the Quest System was born of a misconception I had, which Fleep cleared up rather kindly. >_> I was a little wrong - what?

And everyone? For more information of Fleep's plans please visit this thread. o.o

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19641821&

I was a little harsh at first, but Fleep has some interesting ideas I can't help but be exited about.

commentCommented on: Fri Nov 17, 2006 @ 01:14pm
Oh, Monsieur Fleep! It's alright! Would a hug make you feel better? Because if it would, I am a rather excellent hugger.

I haven't had the chance to try the quest system, but I'm sure once its fixed it'll be great. As for the re-releasing of items, I think it would be a good idea, but only on the really hard quests.

Keep up the fantabulous work!

I haven't had a chance to try out the Quest System yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so soon. I couldn't class myself as an Oldbie - I'll have my 1st Gaiaversary at the end of December - but I wouldn't mind older Donation Items being available through the Quests. The older they were, the more difficult the Quest could be to attain them, so the only way anybody could get them would be by spending time here, working for it - and I can't see a problem with that. wink

This month's DIs - I love the spaceship (you'd never guess, would you?), and Momo is too cute - cute as a box of monkeys, in fact. xd

And thank you to all of the Gaia team for all your hard work to keep the site as good as it is for us, and to keep improving and developing it. Some folks always complain, no matter what... ignore them. rolleyes xd

Also, the oldbies picture made me laugh so I hard, I think I coughed up a lung XD I'm so saving this for future use in the SF vs elitists, MUHAHAHA.

I'm all jazzed about the Quest System. It reminds me SO MUCH of the tutorial from this past summer, especially the requirement of "Making a post in WTG" ...

One of the threads I saw on the subject, one of the posters thought that we'd probably have to roll a virtually impossible result with dice for certain quests. Now that scares me! xd

But yeah. The UFO and Monkey aren't getting too much love, but some people are definitely having a lot of fun with them.

Anylo, I'm an oldbie who got some of my expensive donation items when they were new, and quested for others, and y'know? It's nice getting that "impossible" item after hard work and dedication and shameless exploitation of the kindness of my friends. ninja But I had a lot of reserve funds and hoarded items and such. It's a shame that new users don't have much opportunity to get some items, especially since there's only so many to go around.

I'm an "older" user who thinks old MCs SHOULD BE OBTAINED through the Quest System. I want my chance at minis or DJs. A lot more users would love it if they could get old donation items through the system than users that wouldn't. Majority wins? heart

The main reason why you get more love than anyone else on the team - is because you are so active on the site...the over devs seem like they are hiding around in the shadows compared to you..

I was amazed by the quest system as soon as I noticed that I had to actually change my avatar to do the beginers Avatar changing quest.

The quest system is awesome; and honestly, I don't think it would really possible to foresee every single problem when you have such a huge site like Gaia. Especially with the number of browser/OS/security/etc combos that are out there. Quite honestly, I have to say you all did very well with it. 3nodding

As for getting more attention; you give the community more attention.. If you interact with the community, then of course the community is going to interact back... heart

Thank you everyone!

BTW, please let MCs be a part of the quest system. I've been here long enough to be in both places, and see both sides of the story:

I quested for almost a year to get my Angelic Scarf, and over a year to get my OMG. I'm also thrilled that I was here for the release of the Winged Anklets, Staff of the Angels, and KiKi Kitty. They are all difficult items to quest for, and the value of the KiKi seems to grow by thousands every day.

I am not protective of the time and effort it took for me to get my OMG. I hope that future users will have an easier time than I did. Nor do I think that I have any special status to protect because I was here in '04 when the Winged Anklets were released.

Some users think that old MCs should not be released via quests because people donated (among other reasons). To me, that's just a sign that the userbase of Gaia has been really warped.

June '03: Kind user donates to Gaia, expecting expecting nothing in return except that the community he loves continue to thrive. User receives an Angelic Halo for his kindness.

Nov '06: The same user who once donated to Gaia is now raising holy hell because his SUPER-ELITE item might be attainable to those who work their asses off for up to 24 months!

Seems to me that the once-kind user who donated because he cared about the community now cares only about his worth in gold.

I do think that it's still important to protect MCs as an investment, though. One way of "protecting" the value of MCs might be to limit the items that are attainable via quests. Maybe an item needs to turn two years old before it can be available via the quest system. So, '03 and '04 items might be available via quests now, but users will have to wait a long time before they can get '05 and '06 items. Someone who wants a Mochi will have to quest for it the traditional way, allowing the value of that item to grow. This delay might also put MCs on a more equal footing, value-wise.

As well as some of the more ancient event items (Bunny/Chickie Slippers, Corsage, H2K3 stuff). I really hope you guys decide to include quests for those. Thank you, Fleep for keeping us updated! Despite what some may say, we appreciate your hard work (as well as the hard work of everyone else there ;] ). I'm sure the vast majority of Gaians understand that it isn't easy to keep things up and running, so don't worry about what those picky "why-does-this-not-measure-up-to-my-ridiculus-standards?" kind of people decide to complain about next. 3nodding
I love the quest system! I'm sure it will work out quite wonderfully once things get rollin'. (oh but I had an issue with that first quest...I was posting in other forums at the same time, so when it came to the part about posting in the introduce yourself forum thing, it went screwy whee oopsy daisies!)

I mean, If by the whim of some admin we all got 1million gold, People would b***h and moan about that too. "BUT THE ECONOMY"

I say ******** it.

Allow me to sum up my responses:

Quest system: Good, I know why it took a long time.
MCs in Quest System: Some are unattainable for newer users. If it was made that it was very rare (like, rare like a Mutha Guppa.) then it'd work.
GCD: Starting to get sick of this complaining.
PS3: The worst idea since PSP.

I saw that picture before.

I personally wouldn't mind if the MC would be involved in the QS, if you want them you have to work for them either way.

Those oldbies made me laugh xD

Gasp! Giving newbies oldbies items would be like breaking something really valuable and then causing mass riots on the level of PS3 mass riots. There would be body limbs and broken spirits everywhere! Oldbies lying on the side of the road wailing "Not my imaginary halo that I should have because I am an oldbie and all newbies can suck it, say it isn't so!" While newbies fly by in their shiny new alien aircrafts flipping the bird at whatever poor soul refused to jump out of the way as they rushed to get their oldbie item.

And that would leave the mod team, with the bucket and mop, left behind to clean up the aftermath.

Oh! And the quest system is awesome. biggrin
