Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Forty: Nothing to see here
So my journal entries have gone over-the-hill.

I know it's already Tuesday, but I figured I'd let you know I'm not dropping the journal entries. Still shooting for every Friday, every week smile

But since I spent a bunch of time dealing with the Easter Event ( gonk ) I wasn't in the mood, really, to do this. Just a few things I wanted to mention briefly:

Blue Easter
Blue easter eggs were loaded into Towns, but we couldn't get the graphic showing up properly (so potentially, they were invisible). Some people got them accidentally. They're not equippable, and they were only good for selling to the shops - so in my opinion they're pretty much worthless, except as a way of remembering what went wrong with this event rofl

My 2 Weeks Notice
Some people were calling for my resignation last week. No, this doesn't bother me too much. What bothered me more was that they thought we didn't care -- when really, plenty of Gaia staffers live and die by how the users react to things - and I'm one of them.

I was really upset over the event backlash -- not so much just because many of you were complaining, but because I knew we didn't manage to deliver to the users.

Now, users complain no matter what we do. We're pretty good at telling whether something was a success or not. For example: Inventory Arranger. When the new one went out, people were complaining left and right -- but the net effect was positive, and for the most part, it was people who just didn't know how to use it.

With this past event, we had dropped the egg... er... ball.

So yeah, I was pretty upset that users felt as though we had failed them. Very upset in fact (if you ask anyone at Gaia HQ, I was pretty much surly and upset all of Friday) - but not because of rude things users were saying.

The Future of Gaia
Some user sent me a PM along these lines:
Anonymous
Somebody made a topic in the GCD, about how long Gaia Online is going to stay alive. People said atleast until this generation grows up, and the next will look at it as something that the older generation played and won't like it as much.

I was just wondering what you thought.

it was an interesting question. I've never run a business as big as Gaia is or as long lived as Gaia will be, but here was my response:

Fleep
Gaia is a living, breathing thing. Though it's a huge, lumbering beast it is possible to change it when tastes change.

However, it's dangerous to talk about things in generations like that, because age groups are a gradient, not concrete chunks. Let's say you're 15. You begin to grow up. Does that mean the next generation is your kids? No, it's the new 15 year old who's a couple weeks younger than you. And when he grows up, there's another 15 year old just after him.

It's more important that we pay attention to what's interesting. The good thing about a site like Gaia, though, is that the users create 99% of the content on the site -- so people will be talking about whatever interests them. For a lot of users on Gaia, the storyline, the events, etc. aren't what brings them back -- it's interacting with their friends and talking about stuff that interests them. Having an avatar that represents you is just a big bonus over other community sites, since you can also express who you are (which isn't a sensibility that's going away any time soon).

So yeah, people will change, but I don't think it'll ever just be like interest in the site switches off in the mind of a younger generation.

MOAR LINKZ
I'm writing this on the floor of my bedroom (I just sold my desk) and it's looking like it's going to be a very busy week - so my links will have to suffer again for another entry.

Unless I decide later today that I want to hop in and throw some in, which is entirely possible rofl

Also, another shortish entry. But if I have my way, this Friday's post will be a biggun. Of course, I don't always get my way sad

EDIT #1: Why I sold the desk
So a lot of people are asking why I sold the desk. I'll rip off what I just wrote for Leena_Nightshade:

Quote:
I'm redecorating my room. So I decided to scrap the HUGE desk I had and get a smaller one. I felt the size of it was representative of the amount of value I gave it in my life, and I kind of saw it as a shrine to a lifestyle that wasn't the kind of lifestyle I wanted to live.

So I'll leave you on that very cryptic note rofl

*bows to the Fleepy Fleepness of Fleep* I love Gaia but that last event was pretty plain, I'm sorry to say. The chickys are cute. sweatdrop

Thanks a billion times for keeping up with your journal. You're quite possibly one of the few consistent people in the world! GO FLEEP! xd

We need more Fleeps around - and not just in Gaia. There should be more Fleeps in general. 3nodding

If you didn't want people to think you've failed them, don't do the same event twice in a row, especially with one such as Easter. Its supposed to be one of the big ones.

commentCommented on: Wed Apr 11, 2007 @ 02:02pm
despite wat people say i belive this event was ok ...minus towns that was bad

Do not feel sad for the comments that you've received throughout Gaia. There are those that understand how you feel and support you on your achievements. I suspect that there are not any events coming soon after looking at the calender. Of course, there is Earth day. rofl

You deserve a little break for your accomplishments and enjoy the spring weather. See you on your next journal write. *salutes* ninja

Some Gaian's complained about how the past events were too hard to do because they hated having to fight in the forums in order to get points toward items. The last time we did that was for the last Halloween Event, and for this years Valentine's Day Event.

But now that you made it easier for all of us to play the Events and to get Event Items by using the Rare Event system format. And still some Gaian's complained, and no one yet has yet said "thank you", or bothered to acknowledge that the Events are now easier and much less stressful to do. All the Complainee's cared about was that the items themselves didn't meet they're expectations. They didn't seem to have fun at all with the Event itself.

Maybe its more fun for some individuals to struggle for Event Items. And they instead just link their disappointment for the lack of the challenge at the items themselves and to you. Don't think for a second that you fail anyone. You cant be expected to please everyone all the time, especially when most of the Gaian's your trying to please don't even really know what it is they want themselves.

Aside from all that, Thank you Fleep for my pretty Eggs, and for all my lil' Chickies! 4laugh heart I can hardly wait till the next Event! blaugh

awww, poor Fleep sad
Well don't mind those people... you did an awesome job.

yes, I was extremely disappointed to not see bunny items and yes I was sad to can't get a blue egg.

The blue eggs aren't worthless... people, like myself, love collect things and now because of that bug my collection of '07 event items will never be complete. And it also have created THE rarest item in all Gaia too.

In anyway I was happy to have a nice easter event... I love all event because they make us celebrate and change a bit what happen around.

Hey! No fair, you updated while I was in school gonk Well, at least you updated <3

I'm not going to lie... I was a bit (very) disappointed of the last event, but I can see why you couldn't make it bigger and I'm not mad, at all.

On the other side, I wanted the event to be a bit more difficult, more original. My friends here told me how past events where, and I was really excited to see what happened this Easter, only to find that I didn't had to do anything else but browse around - it didn't feel like a different day.

I'm just saying that because you made me think after reading that PM... just because us, plot-lovers, are not the biggest part of Gaia, that doesn't mean the storyline is going to disappear, right? emo

And, I should get myself a bigger desk >_>...

See ya, and thanks for all your hard work!

Edit: Oh, and for me, it's never about the items :3

Don't let people get you down! The only thing I was disappointed about was the fact I was hoping to get those little easter baskets I saw from previous events for my house blaugh Other then that, I loved it!

It's crazy hectic there, you deserve a hug for doing what you could! 3nodding

The only thing I would have liked to have seen was an announcement letting everyone know they were aware of the problem and were either trying to fix it or had just scrapped it. Most of the people I was communicating with were literally just confused. An announcement would have helped, I think. People do tend to be pretty forgiving and understanding when they know what's going on. biggrin

I'd like to buy the world a coke... and tell it to shut the hell up. Stuff like this makes me wonder about the imminent decline of the human race. Seriously, kids, you're getting something for free on a site that offers free membership, free games, free forums, free free free free. And it gives you something to do. Did I mention it's free? You ever hear that "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" thing? Seriously. Would you go into 7-11 and scream loudly about how they don't have enough free samples of slurpees, demand the resignation of the cashier, throw a hissy fit temper tantrum in the middle of the floor? I'm an old lady. I'm older than Fleep, who is apparently ancient. I have kids of my own who are fascinated with gaia (but still too young!!) and are eagerly awaiting the day they turn 13 so that they can play too. I swear I'd smack the cute off of them if they treated ANYONE like people around this place so casually treat the staff. The world doesn't owe you anything, and a free site especially doesn't. Be thankful that they care enough about your opinions to even take them into consideration and that they actually do give a crap about the people who use the site. Remember that there are REAL people with REAL feelings on the other side of your monitor. For ******** sake, treat people with respect if you ever expect the same. I mean, good GOD, I was a punk in the 80s/90s/well..now/ and still always treated people with some degree of respect just as one human being to another. I'm disgusted with the greater majority of the younger generation (some of you are great, keep it up, stay in school, yadda yadda). I blame hot pockets. ;) Fleep, I also have a behind-the-scenes, thankless job. People depend on me doing my job well in order to survive, literally. I can appreciate how difficult it is to keep truckin' along when people are screaming at you for your few mistakes, when all you want to do is scream, "WHAT ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF I'VE DONE?!?!!" So. Good job, man. And having your computer in your room is serious bad juju. Just sayin. ;)

Hi Fleep. Nice to meet you, and I want to thank you for showing up on my thread to give your side of things. You are not in charge of announcements, we know that. I agree with what Benjamin just said, it wasn't the glitch that angered so many .... it was the lack of announcement of what was going on. I LOVE the new additions that you've added to the site, it's energized everything and made Gaia a lot more fun. I also thank you for communicating with us, it probably does mean you absorb a lot of frustration that could be handed off to a lot of other people, but accentuating the positive helps. Please do communicate to the admins or whoever is in charge, that in case of glitches, a simply announcement usually smooths most if not all feathers. It's just good business no matter what ..... *hint for them: It's not too late for that announcement!* They may think only kids play here and it's no big deal, but a lot of us are adults, have other responsibilities and to have to interrupt other things to see if possibly towns had now been fixed was a HUGE pain.

In spite of the glitch, I have to say that I have a ball here. I meet friends and fellow students/ Graphic Designers on here .... have had awesome debates with people .... (the occasional SCIENTIST shows up on the evolution threads .... eek ) and all in all Gaia has become a big part of my life, and that of my friends .... (who had to hog-tie me initially to force me to join ....) I've also met my boyfriend here! whee

Thank you for all your hard work ... indeed for the entire staff!! You're doing an awesome job ..... my thread was all about helping you guys continue to do so. Good customer service is the key .... and the foundation of THAT ... is communication.

Best Regards,
beaufleur

Hope the rest of your Spring is just that ..... a REST!! Ja mata!!

I'm sorry, but some users are idiots. You could be one of the nameless developers, creators or whatever who do what they can to make this site the awesomeness it is. I for one am very grateful and a happy that you care enough about us users, how appropriate, to talk to us and let us know not only what is going on but your feelings on the subject. So here's a huge thumbs up from me, and I love the hair by the way. heart

I hope my comment in the Bunnies vs. Chickies thread wasn't one of 'em that made you sad. I edited it, but I couldn't go online for a couple of days, so meanwhile 40 pages have been added to the thread. eek

Yeah, anyway, I had thought Easter would be a bigger deal, like Halloween and Christmas, with story, (maybe leftover Zurg cows rofl ) an event forum, maybe one of those cool save-up-your-points meters with a huge prize at the top. But I don't really care too much. The chickies were cute enough, and I got a LOT of them. sweatdrop

I'm just hoping we can get Ian back from wherever he disappeared to after being exonorated, though. We all voted, right? Not guilty, right? *sigh* Sorry for the off-topic. stare I guess I thought that would have been the perfect Easter event ending. But there is a lot of year left and not too many big holidays for a long time, so it might still happen, right...?

Don't worry about what the turkeys say. Gaia is of course much different than when I first joined, but I'm still here. And a lot of other Gaians could say the same. 3nodding Maybe this event will become your oldbie memory whenever you get to be an oldbie. blaugh "I remember Easter 2007, the good ol' Invisible Blue Eggs Event..." wink

Oh the eggs are too pretty to open for the chickies!

People will always complain, you know that! I'm just really really REALLY wishing that that poor unused "Announcements" flag lights up a LOT more to let us know what's going on.

But you got to admit you get a lot more responses when there's been a problem! rofl

Oh. Don't take some people too seriuos. I think the easterevent was fun. I am just glad that there was one at all. We haven't really had an event unless it was x mas or the anniverery or new years and the like. So I am glad that even though it's a small event it was still fun. I felt more like a kid, huntting eggs...er waiting for eggs. XP

Now, I liked the easter event. I mean, what wouldn't I love about free items? I think the only problem was that this was treated too much like a minor event. Rather, it was exactly like St. Patrick's Day. There was no story, no event forum, no real excitement. Just a repeat event, and some free stuff.

Idk. Just a little constructive critisism from an unprofessional kid.

I just want to say, as far as the Easter event went, yeah, it was rather disappointing. But considering how many more events you guys are trying to do, it's not all that surprising. There will always be problems when you try to do too much too soon. And just hearing you say that you knew it was a disappointment is comforting. Because that means you care. So thanks for all your hard work, and do the best you guys can on the next event! wink

(P.S. the chickies may not have been enough, but I still think they're cute... whee )

I thought the Easter Event was pretty cute actually. Since the devs had so little time to come up with the event, I personally think it was okay. It lacked the "omph" of other major events though because just collecting event items isn't as fun as having the GCD explode with storyline theories and manipulating users' imaginations.

Well what you did wrong with the event was....A lot of s**t. It didnt have the feel of the old event, you can totally tell its a bunch of newbs doing it. I mean, no event forum? No easter bunny giving out the stuff! Crappy crappy items with no bani (thats the bunny one) in site!!! sad ! Nobody gives a s**t about chickis! I mean they do but, the holidays main character is a bunny, how could you just kill banis! SHAME ON YOU! Bunny killers. But still, maybe look to the admins for advice (talkin to the devs). I mean, they made such wonderful great events sad , I smile at the memories, then I weep when i remember how terrible every event this year has been. For gods sake, you didnt even have gaia themed items at the anniversary party!!! We got some....I dont even know what the ******** it was! I know it was supposed to be fireworks, but it just looked like suck and fail to me sad .

Well, I have to admit... Easter 2k7 wasn't the greatest event ever. But I thought it was pretty cool. Some people just can't appreciate anything.. gonk There will always be someone who complains about something, just try not to let it gt to you too much. Congrats on another completed event, I can assure you that some users were pleased. 3nodding

I think it's ironic that you want the busy, busy admins to "get their stuff together" but you didn't notice that this is the epitome of the repeat thread.

Geez, deal with it. It's over now anyway.
not to mention Fleep made a journal entry reguarding the event.

Yes and he was quite gleeful about the whole thing. Like we deserved to have a crappy event.

Gleeful about the whole thing? I was miserable, and admitted that I was unhappy, personally, with what happened.

OMG!!!!!!!!!
My suggestion to you then, Fleep, is to be more tactful in the writing of your journal because the way I see it, quite a few of the things you write about can be taken in a negative way. Since we don't know your actual frame of mind when you write such things, it's probably best to leave sarcasm and unnecessary smilies out of it.......... oh, yeah...... and those picture links you include also tend to color what you say.
