Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Thirty-Nine: Let's Dance
All's quiet on the western front. As usual it's been a crazy busy week, but all told, a pretty fun week. Unfortunately, I can't always talk about all the fun stuff that happened, or in what context it happened. Because there are secrets. Horrible, horrible secrets.

This week's going to have a short entry because I can't think of anything else to write about that isn't a secret you'll find out about over the next couple of weeks wink

Gaia: The Gathering
Meetings are the things we hate to love and love to hate -- they're an essential and annoying part of being in a company that's trying to do 203948 different things, but still make it seem like our site has some semblance of cohesion. If you're unfortunate enough to work on the Event/Sponsorship/Quest team (see last week's update) you're in about 15 meetings a week.

Some meetings are a blast. I mean, when you get 5 or 6 Gaia HQers together with the objective being to make something fun, and there are no rules, we usually end up laughing our asses off before the meeting is done. Asses successfully removed, we can then proceed to serious business.

A major source of humor is the tremendous, unfettered evil of several Gaia HQ staffers (yours truly included). Gaians everywhere should consider themselves fortunate that we haven't executed some of our more twisted ideas, unleashed some of our more brash punishments, or turned Gaian against Gaian in what surely would be a gruesome digital Civil War.

(SIDE NOTE: Does "gruesome" mean "filled with grue"? What is "grue" and where can I buy it?)

Fortunately, we talk about these horrific ideas, but an hour of laughing about it usually gets it out of our system long enough to come up with the actual ideas we end up turning into events and features.

On the other hand, some meetings are incredibly dull and tedious and can only be likened to a Friday afternoon Calculus 2 class. No pain no gain, though right? Everyone's got to eat a little dirt before they die.

O_O Do you guys really have ideas that would cause a Gaia civil war to erupt? I mean, we're on the turning point with every plot and feature update. Half of the forums also have intenal strife, at least the big ones with strong community elements, including the GD, GCD, and ED.

The horrific image sums up my feelings about meetings.

This is my last day of vacation and my boss already sent me six emails about when/where/what meetings.

So 15 meetings... lucky you.

Did I mention my boss likes to have meetings at lunchtime?

Perhaps it's about time I learn some martial arts pirate

EDIT: - I've never had Calculus ^^ Whatver that is... Ah the joys of England.

commentCommented on: Fri Mar 30, 2007 @ 11:25pm
I'm a bored English major, so I looked up "grue" in the Oxford English Dictionary for you. It has five noun meanings:

1. With negatives: not a (one) grue, no grue: not an atom, not a whit.

2. A crane.

3. A kind of meal cake made in Cheshire.

4. The action of GRUE v.1; shivering, shuddering; a shiver, shudder.

5. Ice in flakes, or detached pieces.

The verb meanings are:

1. Shuddering (esp. in horror)

2. The call of a crane

So as far as I can tell gruesome either has something to do with that crane kick from the Karate Kid or with making a person shudder in horror.

does Friday at lunch time Calc 2 class count? definantly had that today...though i'd say having a 3 hour lab on Friday afternoon is worse (stupid honor's college making the only lab for my section Friday at 1:45 scream ).

i can't wait to see the slightly less horrific ideas that you guys came up with. i don't like meetings...i tend to fall asleep during them.

Magic reference! eek

My Calculus class was, surprisingly, awesome. I sat way in the back and came up with the craziest ideas, most which revolved ninjas. Like the ultimate ninja weapon was Napalm Cookies because then you could lure your opponent to the sweet taste of death with flavor that seems to explode in your mouth. The trick was to not have them explode in the oven. domokun

Next few weeks? Sounds exciting. What will be released? Will Fleep finally get the break he's been so desperately looking for? And what about those meetings? Will I ever stop writing questions? Stay tuned for next week's entry. Same Fleep-Time, same Fleep-Place.

I named my Coco "Grue." Four or five people gonked at it and said "OMG THAT IS A PERFECT NAME!" ... xd

Anylo. Gaia's horrible secrets really couldn't shock me. I ... could probably shock you with some horror stories out of Gaia's remote past however.

Like.

Gruesome:

Etymology: alteration of earlier growsome, from English dialect grow, grue to shiver, from Middle English gruen, probably from Middle Dutch gruwen; akin to Old High German ingruEn to shiver.

Basically, if you want to buy it, hand a random hairy person ten bucks and ask them to drop their pants.

Does no one play Infocom games anymore? Sigh... I fondly remember having to get milk of grue in Wishbringer (my first grue experience before Zork)

The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

To find a grue, turn off the light at night, or go for a walk in a dark place (but carry a flashlight with you). Do not stay in one location for too long, as grues have a habit of appearing unannounced, as do drop-bears.

In response to the question, does gruesome mean "filled with grue": Yes, it does. 3nodding When I have seen it in books, it is usually the phrase "cald grue" and is usually spoken by a Scottish person. It means a shiver of foreboding, usually relating to the weird.

Good luck buying it! blaugh Perhaps that is what all those horror movies are actually trying to sell you...? mrgreen

Yay! Secrets mean very cool stuff for us in the not so distant future!

I've been there with the meetings. Ugh. At least YOU work someplace fun! I was working in the IT Department of a multi-billion dollar insurance company. Wanna talk dry? Wanna talk meetings about meetings to schedule meetings? Wanna talk PTS (Project Tracking System) reports?

And then most of the programmers would go to IT "WEST" after work (or starting at 4:00 if their directors weren't paying attention) which was the bar down the street to try and make them forget the horrors of the day!

I'm glad I don't work there anymore. Gaia sounds like a GREAT place to work even will some of the crazy uncertainties you all live with.

::Ky-chan will happily wait for the fun and games to begin in the coming weeks! Whhheeee!::

Programming and such are always mentally painful sometimes, but the result can be really splendid.

Well, if it wasn't dull and tedious... it wouldn't be work now would it?

xD

As sad as that sounds... it's pretty much true. May not be completely true for a lot of jobs.. but certain aspects of every job I'm sure have their share of dullness and tediousness.

Your light shines off the walls of the cave, revealing a grue running away from the light source.

My friends and I are making a fantasy film. We're gonna enter a cave in the dark and actually kill the Grue!
