Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Twenty: ?uestlove
Okay. I'm pretty tired. It was a crazy Thursday and now I'm ready to smash some GCDers take a break. My over-hyped feature was finally revealed, and it actually created more of a hub-bub than I anticipated. So here's the breakdown of what's going on:

What is your Quest?
The biggest news today of course is the release of the Quest System which has sparked fires all around Gaia. The basics first...

The Quest System currently features one Quest: The New User Quest which old users are allowed to take because it would be the biggest rip-off ever if they couldn't.

So they did, and they annihilated the Welcome to Gaia forum until we funneled them into their own thread (which annihilated the forums altogether because, apparently, you DON'T want 12,000 users all posting in the same thread in a 3 hour period. Who could have possibly known?)

Anyway, the general reception of the Quest System was good, bugs aside (which were in large part due to unforeseen database pummeling), until it came to the topic of old Monthly Collectibles (MCs).

Gaian Civil War
Now that the Quest System is a reality and Phase Two is coming up, users are asking the question: should Monthly Collectibles be available through the Quest System?

On the one hand you have the Oldbies who feel that MC's are a badge of their longevity; the rich Gaians who feel that their tremendous investment entitles them to exclusivity for all time; and the elitists who feel that people shouldn't be allowed a different way to work hard for MC's (for some reason).

On the other hand you have the Gaians who are sick of the unattainability of MCs, who were too young to buy them when they came out, or who can't spend $2.50 for a small cluster of carefully organized pixels.

What I say right now is... I don't care! We haven't even started Phase Two yet, so no REAL decisions have been made regarding this issue.

We're going to make the decision that we think will be the most fun for the most users and have the best long-term effect on Gaia.

It's Not My Fault!
It's these guys' faults too! I wasn't the only who worked on the Quest System, and if you liked it, all of these people deserve your praise:
Round of applause!

2 Months for this Piece of Crap?!
Contrary to what some may think, Quest System is a sophisticated little chunk of software. It allows us to make quests out of any action on the site and any future actions we ever choose to support. Not too shabby! If you can dream it, it can be made into a quest now.

I started a thread with answers to common questions about Quests here

Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey
Another cool thing that happened this week was the release of the new DIs MCs.

Personally, I think Momo is too cute and will be wearing him as soon as my donation letter arrives.

The spaceship has had a lukewarm reception, but I think Gaians are just underestimating the potential of that alien technology ninja

Gaian Complaint #23982993417: Fixes, not Features!
There's a common complaint I see around Site Feedback and GCD that goes something like this:

Joe User
The devs should stop making new features and events and stuff, and spend more time fixing the site! EVERYTHING's broken ALL the time!

I have a couple things to say about this:

(A) If EVERYTHING was broken ALL the time, you wouldn't have been able to post your complaint rofl

(B) We can do both. The people who write and draw and run NPCs for the site aren't always the people who can code and fix bugs on the site.

(C) We're spending a couple of months working on a bug-fixing cycle - overhauling some old features, fixing bugs in others, and working on just a small set of new things.

We're not stupid (though sometimes it seems otherwise) and we know the site can't continue to grow if it keeps breaking. It's just a bad idea. But the scope of Gaia and the amount of old code makes it difficult to catch everything.

And as soon as we think we've got it down, another 10,000 users log on at the same time and prove us wrong.

So long story short: Yeah. We know. We're trying. We have a great team now and we're all getting better and better at what we do. I know most of you complain because you want Gaia to be all it can be -- but so do we (it's just that when we complain, it usually means a lot more work!)

OLD NEWS: The funniest thing I've seen all week

Nice...
I'm sure I would love the quest system, but during the whopping two days I was away from my computer, the quest system was released and shut down for repairs... I missed it.
Oh well, I'm sure when it comes back, it'll be better than before, and I won't have anything to complain about.

Ha-Haw, The Spotlight says they're going to fire you someday Fleep... What will you do then?

The potential rerelease of the donation items monthly collectables has been causing controversy since the idea of the quest system was first brought up. You still hear the same arguments now as you did in 'o4. I personally find the objections to it silly and like the idea of the older items being kept around in some way. Because with the really old rare items, they're almost never up for sale. So no matter how hard you work, you'll never actually get one. I think this is a great way for a couple of them to slip into the market and be kept around. I know the QS won't be designed so that everyone has a halo. [Though I would find it highly amusing. XD ] I know you mentioned in your FAQ thread for the QS that you would all be looking for feedback on that subject. That's mine: I say put them in and keep the items around. 3nodding I'd hate to never see a bear hat, or a halo ever again.

I'm excited to see what you guys do in Phase two. I think the newbie quest is so cute and I wish it could have been here when I was new!

No matter what you guys do or develop, Gaians are going to b***h. I'm sure you've figured that out already though. rofl

About the donation items, I really hope they're included in the quests. I'm sick of people who think they're the only ones entitled to them because of their join date. I'm not exactly new and I have some stuff that's worth a bit, none of the really super expensive stuff though, but even so, I wouldn't mind it if others got a chance at those things. It'd be great if everyone could have the ability to make their dream avatar, even if it includes very old donation items, as long as they do have to work for it in some way.

I love the quest system, I wouldn't mind whether there were donation items included or not. I just hope theres a few quests that are pretty hard, to give gaians a chalenge to get the items, and that some quest-only items come out eventually for the quest system. 3nodding

woo i'm fleeps Least biggest fan!

and speaking of the donation letters... i've been around a while... but the fact that Me, a casual player, dosn't have the 10thou some gold to buy a donation letter... Really bothers me. Why the price jump? Why are those limited to those who can afford to send in money and those with obscene gold amounts?

Put them in the quest system. I wouldn't mind. they'd still be worth alot in a couple months anyway.

Quests looks great. I can't wait until the Angelic Rod quest is released. I also support being able to quest for MCs. I suggest making them the long and more difficult quests, so that people are deterred from undergoing them, making the MCs still rare and expensive.

I'm been on Gaia since June 2003 and I support donation items going to the quest system. I hope it still happens. Besides, many of us have known that it would happen since 2004. In a PM back then, Ling did note that the Admins don't want the items to become potentially lost forever or completely out of reach from newer users. This is just another path for people to take. Another way to keep the items in circulation. I imagine that the quests will be very hard or pretty time consuming, so I can't imagine it hurting the economy.

I have other friends who've been on Gaia for a long time who agree. We don't really see much of a problem. We knew about this for awhile.

i think the mc's should be able to be given to people through the quest system the elitist and "rich" gaians that have them are just jerks trying to make a profit. But the thing is we shouldnt be able to do 2 quests then BAM! golden laurels i say you should do like 500 quests to get a MC that is if this thing is still going by then (quest system) and The mods have time to make that many or even more

Wow, this is just awesome!! >.<

I fully support putting the donation items monthly collectibles into the quest system. Yeah, just because people have been on gaia for a long time, and they deserve to have old donation items monthly collectibles, but think about it. When they first started, were ninja headbands over 500k? Were there kiki's for 150k? I remember when I first started, and donation items monthly collectibles were around 6.5k each. Everyone could afford them if they put time and effort in making gold. Now, it is nearly impossible to get them that cheap. New players can no longer get 2003 items, unless they win a great prize. Every new player should have the chance to get any item! heart

Oh, and the quest system is brilliant. marvellous. superb. Great job guys! Keep it up! One more thing... Moira's stalking me!!! crying

1. The Quest System is awesome. Good work!
2. Allowing users to Quest for old MC's is only a good idea if, in the end, you get the MC from the marketplace at current market value. The creation of additional MC's would upset a lot of people who have put in a great deal of time and effort (and often real-world cash) to acquire said MC's.
3. Fix the marketplace search bug. I want to be able to search for AFK, OMG, BTK, Emo Bag, and G-BOT. xp

Your right, no one can do 400 things at once. You all are trying your best, most of these people have no clue what it takes to run something like this. I'm studying to be a video game and graphics designer. So I have seen how complicated and nervewrecking this kind of work is. It takes a LOT of patience, and it takes many, many, many times in doing it, before you finally get it done right. Keep up the great work, and just do the best you can. That's all I ask ^^

I'm a midbie I guess. I've been here since early '05 on a previous account and was way too young to do anything other than talk on Gaia... I think giving anyone old donation items would be a decent idea for the quest system and it could even lower the complaints of inflation..Which I'm personally getting tired of... It could help..

Oh and the quest system is fabulous...
