So we originally went into this war because we thought there were weapons of mass destruction and genocide, right? Well, what's our purpose now?
--The Vietnam War
In both these wars we went in to fight for a greater cause and ended up attempting to convert them to a democratic government. Andrew Alexander, author of the article "Iraq or Vietnam, the Excuses are Still the Same," said exactly what his title mentions. The excuses are almost exactly the same--and it's been at least 35 years. It's true. History repeats itself. Speaking of which, we lost that war...what's in store for this one?...
Alexander also says, "In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson announced in a dispute with Mexico that he would 'teach Latin Americans to elect good men' and proceeded to bombard Veracruz, with serious loss of life."
Doesn't that sound slightly familiar?
--Do They Need Our Support?
Not really. There are plenty of leftover soldiers from Sadaam's army which need little to no training. Sadaam's gone, so I think all they need is instruction from their new president to turn the learning that was originally meant for evil to be transformed into something positive.
Now we come to the most obvious issue. 2,500 American soldiers have died. That averages out to 2 people dying each day. Although that doesn't seem like that much in comparison to America's vast population, think of it as 2 of your friends, family, or friends' families dying every day.
The way I see it, we've refused to pull out so far, and because we've been in it for--what is it, 4 years now? I don't think we'll be doing that any time soon.
