Unlike most of the people on his planet, Velsper was born with pale, nearly colorless hair, accompanied by unique ice blue eyes. A milky complexion, his skin is flawless, cool to the touch, but smooth despite his rigorous training regiment. This is due to the intense healing factors his body was born with; though it make take hours or days, his body will always restore him back to optimal efficiency. It is also common among Athanasians that their bodies stop physically aging around what appears to be their early to mid-twenties, retaining their youthful figure for centuries. Reaching five-foot-seven in height, he's actually quite a bit shorter than the average six-foot-one of his home planet. Though this did cause a bit of trouble when he first started handling weaponry, his shorter stature has actually come in handy, allowing him to move quicker than his adversaries. Fangs accent his canines, a common feature in Velsper's people. They are retractable, though it is a skill that must be learned when control over bloodlust is mastered. When bloodlust occurs, no matter the eye color, the irises are infected with a vibrant red and the pupils flatten and slit like a cat's -- a telling sign.
Velsper's attire routinely changes, but a favorite of his consists of a tight fitting leather top that resembles a vest of sorts, which is paired with a cravat about his neck to hide the strange mark whose origins have alluded him. The vest serves as a sort of chest plate created with a ribbed texture, and is very durable, which is why he is normally seen wearing it while in combat. Dark pants accompany the vest and a sturdy belt that often holds his various weapons. On his feet, high tan boots encase his lower legs and feet, with extra padding added to the knees. On top of all that, he wears a blue trench coat -- something that has come to be accepted as his trademark, or signature clothing item. It reaches down to his feet, splitting in the back at his tailbone, creating two coat-like tails. A high collar reaches up to conceal his neck from behind, and a series of buttons and straps run up his sleeves. Around his neck, he also wears a heavy, blood red pendant that he never takes off. He tends to dress to impress, and though he’s very good at it, most will admit that he looks good in whatever he is wearing, or not.
hero or villain? »
Groomed from birth to take his place in the hierarchal society, Velsper is the now the only son of the Undead King. Egocentric in his own right, this aristocratic prince has got the pompous sneer down to a science; that is, when his emotionless stoicism takes a back seat. Cocky should be his middle name. His aloofness doesn't divert from his stubborn personality however -- when he sees something he wants, he goes for it with the intention of coming out victorious... no matter what the cost. This takes into account his questionable moral code, which appears to be largely nonexistent. As a whole Athanasians have the capability of all human emotions, though they rarely exercise the kind and caring ones. That doesn’t not mean Velsper is completely heartless, but the emotion is frowned upon in their society, considering it to a weakness. Respect, power and dominance rule their society.
Velsper can be charming when it suits his purpose, despite his race’s abhorrence of what they call the weaker emotions. He can also be caring, to a certain degree, though that’s a discussion in and of itself. It’s quite difficult for him to utilize the feeling, since he was brought up having all potentially “weak” emotions forcibly stomped out of him as a part of his molding to carry on the royal line. Trained to remain calm, cool and collected, Velsper doesn’t get flustered about much of anything, and it’s extremely hard to get him to loose his temper. A word of caution when the rare event happens, because all Athanasians are utterly vicious when in a rage. Velsper is very malicious when angry, going straight for the heart though he also sees the enjoyment in waiting out revenge, milking it for all its worth. His cunning, vindictive personality emerges in and outside of battle, where he’s ruthless to the point of savagery. He knows his way around most weaponry and is quite proficient in hand-to-hand combat despite his smaller stature. His lesser frame doesn’t make him any less powerful.
He also tends to make decisions on whim, though he will pause to strategize and think things through when it comes to more serious dealings. Otherwise, they are simply not important enough for him to bother to care. Even when he comes off standoffish, Velsper does indulge in what some people might call fun. It’s a bit darker than most, but Athanasian humor usually is. Blood is an everyday affair for this vampire race, along with the bloodlust that comes with it. Fortunately, he is old enough to have effectively mastered and curbed his lust, holding out until only moments of extreme hunger. The normal limit of going without feeding for most is several days, though he can drag it out to least a week. This doesn’t come without a price and it costs him his patience and self-respect, something he loathes to surrender because he considers that it failure, and he does not accept failure willingly. His self-control is extraordinary, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.
There seems to be another side to Vel’s personality alongside his chilly disposition and emotionally distant apathetic indifference. Because he has to keep up a constant front, he’s developed something like a split personality. Since meeting Lark however, he’s found that he doesn’t necessarily need to come off as unfeeling. He finds himself becoming more open, less stiff, and more blasé and flippant than what was a predictable amount for him. More often now, a small smug smile has fixed itself to his lips, replacing the brooding frown that consistently marred his features. Sharing inner feelings isn’t welcome on Athanasios -- psychology isn‘t a popular subject there and is often overlooked because it’s a “soft” science, despite the fact that his kind have an innate talent in taunting. Knowing how to push another’s buttons is almost second nature, and Vel is continuously determined to figuring out how to push Lark's, or anyone who he has trouble getting riled up. In general, he is unhappy with his life, as he only exists to exist, and there is no real meaning to it beyond that.
long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away »
Growing up on the dark planet of Athanasios, life is hard with its dog eat dog world mentality - literally. If you're on the lower end of the food-chain, you likely get sucked dry. Athanasian culture circulates around the amount of power one possesses, which depends on whose Sire you belong to. Scripts, texts and even the language are greatly similar to the Grecian and Roman language and the inhabitants are a materialistic culture dependant on carnal pleasures. The more you have, the stronger you are and in turn, it gives you higher rank. On his planet, Vel currently holds the title of Prince Regent. This is because the monarchy takes turns, in a sense, of ruling. Reign usually lasts for a century before status changes. His father and mother are in a slumber; the only way their race gets any kind of real rest because they do not actually sleep -- they simply don't need it because they are essentially living dead. Before being summoned to Earth, Velsper was nearing the end of his first reign, making his abduction even harder to stand. No doubt, his disappearance has caused a great ruckus on his home planet.
Despite their unnecessarily archaic life style, the Athanasian race is technologically advanced, only a slight bit more than Earth's, though it was originally need that forced this on them. Because they have no need for oxygen and are largely unaffected by extremely cold temperatures found in space, they can travel through the universe as long as a spaceship is available. Velsper's race has been around for a very long time. It's not uncommon for their race to pick up and move off to another planet once their sun dies, and they've done so many, many times. Relocation is easy because there's not many planets that cannot sustain them. Athanasians can live for an eternity. Presently, there are about two-hundred thousand of them in total. They were around 8 million six millennia ago, but an extensive, debilitating civil war wiped out more than half of their population. It was a great loss for their kind, though some see it as necessary. Their numbers were no longer sustainable; they all needed nourishment after all. Now, the civil war is seen simply as a large scale feeding effort with the exception of the few who still carry a grudge.
Vel was born four centuries after the incident, one of the few created in quite some time. A strange thing on Velsper's planet, is that his kind are not "born" as humans are. They are "hatched" from the fruit of a sacred kind of tree that feeds on the blood of their kind. You must have permission to give your blood to the tree, and not everyone is allowed children. It takes a year for the fruit on the tree to ripen and fall. When this happens, the shell around the fruit breaks and the baby inside is "born". These trees are called Xylon Vitae, of Life Trees. The fruit on the trees are known as Pomona Vitae and greatly resemble pomegranates. If a fruit is picked form the tree before its ripened, the baby inside will die. To do so earns the perpetrator an automatic death sentence. Death is what Athanasians fear this more than anything else and is kept a closely guarded secret, even to their own. Only those privileged enough are informed of the gruesome details and because of their immortality, they cannot die of natural causes. To kill someone like Velsper, or his body must be torn into pieces then burned, leaving no trace behind.
To feed and survive is what they were created to do. When these otherworldly immortals are slain, their souls do not move on to another existence. The existence they live is the only one they get -- the curse of immortality; to be utterly alone.
Existence was difficult for Vel, especially with what everyone seemed to be expecting of him. Though it’s a known fact that these vampires stop aging at a certain age, it doesn’t not necessarily mean that they are exactly that old when their aging ability comes to a halt. Because vampires age extremely slowly, it could take at least a hundred years for a single vampire to attain the appearance of a ten year old. Velsper spent nearly two centuries as a teenager, which were, with out a doubt, the worst years of his life. They were the years that got into trouble of numerous occasions with his maverick attitude, constantly looking for a chance to show off and impress. By this time, Velsper had undoubtedly slept with a third of the population, though that wasn’t really uncommon since hormones are developed “early” in an Athanasian’s life, typically around their one-hundredth birthday. Example: while one’s appearance may be that of a twelve year old, their age dictates that they are actually around one-hundred and twenty years old, a well enough age to be sexually active. It’s widely accepted, especially since these vampires do not have children the conventional way.
Aggressive in battle, Velsper received military education at a very young age. Much like the Spartan warriors told about from Grecian history, Athanasians are war mongers; cruel and lethal in battle. In fact, the military's slogan is "eradico totus vos non obtineo, victoria est totus." Translated, it means "destroy all you do not keep, victory is all." Learning how to fight with a sword was taught, though they were told how to use their own body as a weapon, the best kind to have. That was only part of his training. Every vampire is taught how to harness their mental abilities at an early age. Unlike physical combat, this training is actually needed, otherwise, a new vampire may suffer from a psychic overload, reducing them to an irreversible, death-like state. Because there are those with abilities that are a bit stronger than others, specialized trainers help those with a specific talent. Velsper surpassed his with flying colors... and any competition that came his way. It was somewhat of a requirement in order to inherit the throne. Just because he's the king's son, doesn't necessarily guarantee ascending in rank.
It was the year when he ascended the throne as Regent, that he met the Extra-Terrestrial. His arrival was intriguing to Velsper, as was Lawcere himself. Not many others visited Athanasios, or any other planet that the race had inhabited, due to the fact that those that did had a tendency to fall prey to the inhabitants. Because they fed off of each other and drank synthesized blood, exotic blood was a rare treat most weren’t willing to allow to escape. To make a long story short, they had run into each other a bit by accident. Or to be more precise, it was he who was topped over by the attractive alien who careened around a corner he was about to turn, running from another of his kind who thought him to be a midnight snack. Velsper was immediately drawn to him, in some odd, inexplicable way. It wasn’t exactly a pleasant night, well, for Lark, at least. It was Velsper‘s curiosity that had most likely saved the outsider from becoming the other vampire’s side dish. After establishing an agreement between the two which unfortunately meant biting was off-limits, Lawcere spent a lengthy amount of time on his planet -- “conducting research” was pretty much the only answer he’d received when he’d inquired about it. The last thing he’d expected was for an actually relationship to begin between the two; it was even more puzzling to the vampire that he began to care.
Though their liaison was viewed as lack of practicality on his part by his followers (who thought he should take advantage of Lark in a different kind of way), there was nothing they could do, and so in the end, the issue was dropped and rarely discussed. Though they argued often and Lark could easily annoy him, Velsper began to find himself changing. The emotions that he thought his training had essentially killed, began to surface more an more often -- and his closest companions began to worry, some even attempting to get rid of the source itself. Fortunately, before any of these conspiracies could be fully carried out, Lawcere received word from his own planet. Allowing Lark to leave was the hardest thing Velsper had ever forced himself to accept, knowing that he might never see him again. After his departure, the vampire withdrew into a more malevolent persona to cover his hurt and confused feelings, though Lawcere had already done his damage, and Velsper would never be the same again. To this day, Vel still carries some resentment that Lark had left.

He's territorial, so he always has a distinct, perpetual compulsion to mark things as his own. Vel can adapt easily to most situations. He always seems to be surrounded by organized chaos. His room is a mess but won’t allow anyone to clean it. As a vampire, he has a natural urge to glance repeatedly at someone’s throat while speaking. Impolite as it may seem, Velsper tends to openly stare, usually at things he finds curious or interesting. Speaking in a monotone, his main face of humor seems to be a combination of sarcasm and a deadpan expression.

Blood; the way it tastes, smells and the way it pulses just beneath the skin. Getting his way. It's always been that way and he's not ready for that to change. Ever. Affection, despite the way he was brought up. Swords; his favorite type of weapon, though firearms are rather handy at times. New, unusual things. He likes learning all he can, as to not be caught unawares. The night, especially midnight: it's a power time for him. Long hair, for two reasons. One would be that it’s nice to use against someone in a fight, and two: in bed. It’s a secret, but Vel has an uncharacteristic weakness for cute things. This includes children and animals. Male and female lovers. Gender doesn’t matter to him: he goes both ways. Things just aren't interesting without a challenge. He likes the tension. Power. Without it, you can’t get acknowledgement or respect.

Sunlight. It too bright and rather uncomfortable, plus, it's draining to his energy. Failure; it's simply not acceptable by any measure. The fact that most are taller than him. He hates having to look up to glare someone down. Being stranded on earth. Vel doesn't like feeling out of his element. Showing weakness and not being in control. The self-righteous. They irritate him to no end -- he doesn’t need to be told his action’s aren’t “honorable”. Being stabbed with sharp, pointy objects. It won't work, enough already. Earth's so-called "vampire" folklore and myths; they just really have no idea. Having to repeat himself. It's very irritating and completely unnecessary. Taking orders from others -- he gives them, thank you very much. The customs of his people. They’re just so tedious and overbearing. What a pain. The Gods; he doesn’t like the idea of someone capable of messing around with his fate.

Every Athanasian is born with a special gene that contains parasitic properties, giving each member the heightened abilities of stealth, smell, sight, strength, and healing. In this, they are immune to disease and can come back from the brink of death, though only under the right conditions. Their blood contains a “fountain of youth” trait that translates to the healing property his saliva holds. In order to feed, he is capable of a hypnotic stare to immobilize his prey, though it's not completely unpleasant at times, as his bite induces pleasure to both parties if he so wishes. Unfortunately for most, pleasure is only usually reserved for drawing blood from lovers. Without feeding for extended periods of time, after about a month, those of his race will enter a defenseless coma until sustenance is given. It’s very dangerous and usually fatal to give an comatose vampire blood, because once they begin feeding, they cannot stop until the blood-host is drained completely. Sentient blood keeps him the strongest, though human blood will do when he's in a pinch, though a larger amount is necessary to properly sustain him. And like some other races, he can infect others. Humans are especially easy to turn, though it’s pretty much against universal law.
Aside from that, Velsper can walk in daylight with the correct layering of clothing, but only for several hours because it weakens him considerably, and proper feeding needs to be addressed afterward. Telepathy is usual in his kind, as well as various psionic abilities. Empathy isn't usually a strong trait, though most vampires are able to "smell" fear. Against other races, mind alteration is more effective, but majorily useless if used on their own kind, because of the resistance to it that is built up over time. Younger vampires are obviously more susceptible to it, however. It's also not atypical for each Athanasian vampire to possess a skill that is stronger than others. The strength of such an ability compared to others, like most things, are dependant on a vampire's status and Sire, though not necessarily age. Age is important, as well as Sire's, but like any other race, there are anomalies here and there. Another deciding factor would be that a vampire's power is exceptionally weakened during daylight. Velsper's ability happens to be extremely advanced telekinesis. On earth, he'd be comparable to an Esper.
