>>________ Now for Business
______Appearance:
Possessing a distinctively rugged edge, Rome reaches six feet in height. He has the muscled, but lean and agile body of an athlete because of his rigorous training. He weighs in around 170 lbs, mostly because of pure muscle mass. With a face that's perfectly symmetrical, he is quite attractive. His short, light brown hair retains an almost curly attribute, a reason why he keeps his hair so short. Dark, hazel eyes rimmed with green are capable of a piercing, sensual look that can set fire. They sit on the opposite sides of a broad nose and un-kissable lips that are softer than they look, are usually pulled into a frown. As he's not a big fan of shaving, a five o'clock shadow is usually present on his chin. His skin holds an olive tint, obviously passed along to him by his Mediterranean ancestors. As far as clothing is concerned, Rome keeps to the darker shade of the spectrum; blacks, grays, dark reds or blues. White accents are acceptable, but you'll never see him wearing bright, happy colors of pink or yellow. Not really attempting to be stylish, Roman opts for the practical and comfortable over fashionable and constricting.
______Personality:
As the leader of the X-Men that strive to protect the human race, one would think that Mr. Payne would be a little more liking of the people he's saving daily. In spite of this, Roman seems to dislike normal folks quite a bit (though he's not exactly a fan of his kind either), mostly to do with reasons concerning his childhood. Fortunately for everyone, this heartless man won't stand idly by. He also has a bit of an inferiority complex, so when a task is given to him, he carries it out to the best of his ability, though even that's something of an understatement. This man is a perfectionist -- he does not easily accept anything but the absolute best of himself and others, and continually pushes himself over the edge to attain this, and sometimes this backfires on him and requires someone to stop him from hurting himself. He can be judgmental at times and will impulsively provoke others to reach their optimal capacity. He's quite protective, not to mention a bit overbearing, he tends to take charge in most situations, whether its his business or not. Most people resent him.
Blunt and sometimes sarcastic, he'll let you know what on his mind (usually without sparing any feelings unless he really cares), that is; if he feels like divulging this information to begin with. He can be more tightlipped than a virgin and is a very good secret keeper. If you have a secret, he'd be the one to tell. Rome holds trust very high on his list of honorable qualities, though his own moral code might need a good looking at. In that respect, he's contradictory and something of a hypocrite -- not that he really cares. Uptight, he can hold a grudge exceedingly well, that it sometimes gets to a point where it begins to dictate and impede on his good decision making skills. He's also insanely loyal to those who have gained his trust and respect, which is why, to him, betrayal is the worse thing a friend can do to him. He's not into forgiveness either, which is why Hugo's treachery is difficult to accept, especially with the "eye-for-an-eye" mindset he has. His volatile and dangerous tendencies certainly don't help his anger management issues either.
Roman is only passionate about things he cares about, and will go to great lengths to acquire something he desires. Impulsive at times, that doesn't stop him from being decisive and determined. No, it simply means that he usually gets himself into another mess he'll get himself out of later. Luckily for him, that mentality has held strong so far. Stubborn to the worst degree, he doesn't like bending to another’s will, even though he won't think twice about bending the rules for his own benefit. Though he's not an severe egoist, Rome is acutely arrogant and often allows his pride to get the better of him. The X-Men Commander can appear to be standoffish and aloof as well, as Rome continually pushes most people away, mostly in fear of hurting someone though not many people can see the better qualities he holds (few that they are). He could be called a misanthrope, as he believes that most people are idiots and are generally annoying, but the bigger reason behind it is actually because of an unfortunate incident that happened when he was growing up.
______Biography:
From the start, misfortune has plagued Roman, starting with his birth. Rome was born on a cold day in December, the day before Christmas in a rural town in Nevada where everybody knew everybody. Rumors started soon after, becoming more and more as he grew up, calling him a "demon child." It was a miracle he was even born, considering his mutant abilities were present before birth, starting when his mother's water broke. Before his powers manifested permanently, his abilities were invoked whenever he was put under a great deal of stress. While his mother's body somehow formed a protective barrier from her psychic abilities and survived until the end of the pregnancy, his twin brother was not so lucky and died in his mother's womb. When Roman was born, it had taken so long for her to push him out, that the doctor held him as his mother died; it was a painful death for her because she was a mutant. However, no one realized at the time that it was Roman who had killed his mother, because his mutated ability became dormant after his birth.
His ability appeared several times in his early childhood, though only animals were victim, and all were on accident. Poor Rome, who loved animals, always tried to pet the neighborhood which were mostly cats, there were several dogs and a baby bird involved. Unfortunately for him, the animals all seemed to have a sixth sense about his latent powers and would either run or attack him, resulting in his high stress. When they came into contact with him, they would drop over dead, as though they'd had a heart attack. His father didn't know about his son's abilities. Even when the boy had come to him, telling him that animals were scared of him, he simply told the boy that he tried too hard to catch them and that they were simply frightened by his overzealous attempts. His power also showed itself at school on more than one occasion, killing a flower a girl in his second grade class had given to him, because he was embarrassed by his classmates. They stayed away from him after that, since it had been witnessed by several students, and rumors started that he was cursed or worse: a mutant. He was mostly avoided.
He began to get bullied soon afterward, though it was indirect for the most part, as many students were scared of him. He only added to their fear as he began to draw into himself. He became angry and hurt, and was prone to glaring. The bullying eventually lead to the most obvious result, even though he had managed not to use his powers again until a fateful day in the third grade. Things had gotten out of hand when a group cornered him after school. Before then, there had been no real fights because they had been afraid to touch him after witnessing the death of the flower in his hands, so there had not been any physical contact between himself and anyone. But not that day. That day, when the leader of the gang had approached him, his powers manifested themselves, and this time they stayed. He'd killed two before they retreated. They police became involved, and though the children's deaths were investigated, there was no actual proof that Rome had killed either of them as he'd left no evidence behind, killing them like he'd done to the animals -- like an untimely heart attack. Though it was suspicious, nothing could be done.
Roman ran away from home when he was ten years old, after a fight with his father after telling him the truth about what happened between himself and the bullies. When Rome ran away that night, and his father never went to the police to file a missing person's report, completely uncaring and willing to allow his son to leave, hopeful that they'd never meet again. To this day, Rome's father still lives alonein his old home in Nevada. After leaving, Roman was picked up by a group of runaway mutants around his age. He was taken in by them, and became a part of the "family", though he knew the others kept their distance after divulging his own mutant power. Despite their fear of him, they taught him the ins and outs of living on the streets, pick-pocketing and general thievery. All about stealth, he was very good at what he did. He tried to keep his abilities in check, and had only killed a little more than a handful of people before Xavier found out about him. The Professor sent Wolverine and Jean Grey to find him in an attempt to help him and to get him of the streets.
Their meeting didn't go as well as planned. Rome wasn't willing to even listen to them on their first encounter (in which he was involved in a bank robbery) because his distrust in others kept them from helping him. They caught up with him again about a week later, and after talking alone with Jean, she managed to convince him to go with them to the school. He arrived there that day, but didn't venture out of his room for almost a week. Xavier, who thought he'd relate to her more, sent Rouge to try to convince him to come out. They got along rather well, and after time, she became something of a big sister to him. She was the first person he could actually touch, because her powers acted almost as a negating effect to his own, allowing him to have contact with her without killing her or making her sick. As time went on, most of the students accepted him, treating him as they did Rouge. Soon after, he met Hugo, whom he first clashed with, but became the best of friends. They shared secrets, he told him things he couldn't share with Rouge, and Roman trusted him completely.
Upon reaching high school level classes, Xavier assigned him to Wolverine, another one who could recover from most anything Rome could throw at him and taught him hand-to-hand combat and other skills in the Danger Room. Because they were together so often, Rome began looking up to him like he had his own father, but he'd never admit that to Logan's face. After a while, he -- along with Metronome -- were nominated for the new team of X-Men. And despite his want to be the best, he didn't entirely mind that Hugo was chosen to lead the team. It mainly rooted from the simple fact that he was his most trusted friend. Roman knew that his bad anger management was a problem and that between the two of them, Hugo would be the better choice. Though it irked him a bit, he tried not to let it bother him. He competed with him on a daily basis anyway, so it was nothing new. Except when Metronome pulled rank on him, which put Reaver in a bad sort of mood that required an all day affair in the DR. That, or when he'd come back from a mission he'd retreat to his the computer lab.
Because of his anger problems, he also spent a lot of time with Dr. Grey. Jean was very understanding of him, and she listened to his rants on many different subjects, even though she had to often remind him of what they were fighting for. During their time together, she taught him about minor medicine and genetics; about why he born the way that he was. After some time, it was only natural that he developed a bit of a crush on her, and was devastated when she never returned with the other psychics. Things only got worse when Hugo left without a word to Rome, someone he called his best friend, as he believed that he should have been the first, or at least the one who Hugo would have said goodbye to at the very least. This fact alone only adds to the reasons why he now so hostile towards even the mere memory of him. Rome dislikes it when his former best friend is brought up in discussion by others, though he is constantly on his mind, in his thoughts. A very big reason why he's so serious about his position on the X-Men, is actually because of Hugo. He wouldn't be trying so hard, otherwise.
______Powers:
Multitalented, Rome's aptitude for excelling in many fields is due to an almost edictic memory, however; this is not his mutation. He can easily recall various information and can do a great deal of complicated things after seeing it done only once. Lately, this happens to be majorily in various martial arts these days, and its how he became so skilled in computer technology. When it comes to combat, Roman is in top shape, working out in the Danger Room whenever he can (usually by himself), and is skilled in using many types of weaponry. Though its extremely useful, Rome hates it because it allows him to remember all the bad times in his life that he'd rather forget, but can't. However, this is not even close to the hate he feels towards his own mutant ability.
Reaver, a suiting alias to Rome's power, which forces him to wearing clothing that covers most of his skin and gloves on his hands. "Touch of Death" is what Rome calls his power, the ability to drain the life-force or pure energy from another living creature into himself. Though this power can make him stronger, it also prevents him from being close to others physically, and it's obvious as he makes a point to distance himself from people both physically and emotionally. The effectiveness of his power depends on the life form he's draining. The draining process is very quick and can kill a normal human within seconds. The stronger the life-force is, the harder it is to drain energy. If his touch doesn't kill, the victim gets very, very weak, becoming devastatingly ill and can take days to recover. Mutants are the hardest to use this power on, as they are naturally enhanced and his powers aren't as effective. It also takes a bit longer to drain them, lengthening seconds to minutes. He's still trying to develop a way to master his power, though so far, he doesn't seem to have the control for it yet.
The energy he takes can be used in two ways, the first of which is being stored in his body to later be released through energy blast and such and he can also absorb raw energy from attacks. For example, if he is hit with a blast of kinetic fire energy, his body will consume the life-force behind it, though the fire itself will still damage his body. Upon taking the life energy into himself, he can enhance other abilities and increase things such as speed, strength, agility, durability, and healing. He can raise just one greatly, or he can raise more than one, though the effect will be less dramatic. The amount these increase also depend on how much life-force or energy he consumes. The larger the source is, the more life-force the being holds. Therefore, a tree would hold more life-force than a human, though a mutant holds more life-force than either because they also arbor abilities of their own, enlarging their life-force exponentially. For example, if Rome was to absorb all the energy of Jean Grey's Phoenix Force, he could become as powerful as Superman, without the Kryptonite. Unfortunately, he needs direct contact with the source to do this. And time.
He's a latent psychic as well, and though he's not aware that he even has that kind of ability, it shows though in his incredible intuition. This is partially a result of having absorbed psychic energy from other mutants, as minimal as the amounts usually are, a great portion of it is from his mother specifically. As his mother was a powerful psychic mutant herself, he sometimes has precognitive dreams, though he usually forgets them by the time he awakes, or in the case that he does remember them, he doesn't take into account their meanings, overlooking them completely. When he was younger, these abilities manifested more strongly, though they've become predominantly dormant now, gradually fading as he reached his preteen years when his own powers surfaced.
______Likes:
Winning. It just feels good. The Danger Room; great exercise and a fantastic way to vent. Trees, for a variety of reasons. Animals, though they don't seem to like him very much at all. Mystery novels and horror movies. Technology. Convenient and useful in a tight pinch.
______Dislikes:
Crowds and being around a large number of people. Emotional people, though he can be at times, especially when angry. To add to that, he despises not being in control, whether it be his emotions or otherwise. Most sweets, especially white chocolate. Being second best. Authority, especially the human kind. They've always been causing him trouble. Children -- all that crying... whiny brats, the lot of them. Popcorn, simply because the kernels are irritating.
