The Devil's Backbone - This movie takes place during a war. I'm unsure which one, but I'm assuming Spain was involved, due to this being a Spanish dubbed movie. It's about a "hideout" place, where children of parents who are in the war, go to be cared for. Personally, I don't care for subtitles, but this movie was worth it.
It's said that Pan's Labyrinth is a spiritual sequel to this movie. Comparing the two... both have death. Both take place during a war. Both are great films. Pan's Labyrinth has magic. The Devil's Backbone has ghosts.
If you can tolerate subtitles, I recommend this movie.
The Orphanage - Another English subtitled movie. This movie takes place in... you guessed it, an orphanage. It's about a girl who was adopted, married and decide to move back into the orphanage, which is now abandoned. The couple have an adopted child, whom they believe to have imaginary friends...
Again, if you can tolerate subtitles, this is a movie worth picking up.
Both movies... I believe both of these movies were classified as horror. When I think of a horror movie, I think of movies like Halloween, Jason, etc. Where theirs a killer in the movie, hunting people down. These two movies don't have that. They do have scary parts to them, but I don't think I'd classify them as horror.
