Memoirs of a Lunatic
I have a lot to say as I am a very opinionated person. I'll often post whatever happened on a certain day or what's happening around me in general. Othertimes I'll post thoughts that I'm having. I also like reviewing movies, books, and other mediums
This Title Means Something More Than it Appears To
Can I write a journal entry for the "Ink Expression Collection" in less then 11 minutes before I start getting ready for prom? Let's find out!

So I felt like talking about symbolism - things representing and meaning other things and whatnot. EVERYTHING in our society connects to symbolism, I've noticed, so it's important. Colors have symbolic meaning, shapes have meaning, events have meaning. What doesn't have meaning anymore?

Funnest example: the apple logo for... Apple on the iPods and Macs and all their other projects. It represents the company name, right? Yes. But its also symbolic homage to the guy who invented the modern computer, who just happened to kill himself by injecting an apple with cyanide and then eating it (don't even get started on what the symbolism in that could have meant). Oh, and you know how the Apple symbol used to be a rainbow? He was also gay. All that for the apple on the back of your iPod.

It makes you wonder what else carries deeper symbolism than we realize. Of course, it seems like human nature to assign meaning to things. English is no difference - its a language. And what is a language other than a collection of words that are all symbolic for what they mean? Don't discount letters either. They're symbolic for sounds, right? And of course, Literature loves injecting symbolism into itself.

I do have a little -theory that when we look for symbolism in Literature, we're sometimes trying to hard to find meaning where the author didn't even intend for there to be any. And sometimes I think authors put in a bunch of strange things for people to analyze endlessly. But that's not the point. There IS symbolism to it, so it's important to Literature.

I have an interest in iconography currently, also (which has been heavy influence for the "Ink Expression Collection" wink . Icons are symbols too, of course. Everything represents something else which represents something else continuously. As an English Major, half the job is examing this phenomon too in Critical Analysis after Critical Analysis.

Characters are often symbolic, too. Some serve more purpose as a symbol than they do a person even (Pearl from The Scarlet Letter comes to mind, as do both Philosophers in Candide). Every symbol out there connects to reality at some point. And symbols in reality are no different. Books are symbols of not just messages but of realities in themselves (as are videogames, and possible music to some extent).

So what are you symbolic of as a person? What do you represent? What do you want to represent?

Express yourself. In Ink and in Person.

(BTW, I finishe in 16 minutes. Not bad, if still longer than I wanted biggrin )
