Today starts week 3 of our term in college. I'm going half time so the only classes I have are an online communication class and a math class. The communication class I fell behind in but I'm catching up. The main reason for this entry is math though.
In the placement test I scored well enough to be in math 95 which is some kind of intermediate/advanced algebra. I scored really low on the range to enter math 95 though so the suggestion was I take a step backwards and enter math 70 which is elementary algebra. So far this class is really easy for me. I hardly take any notes and half the time I find myself not paying attention because I already know a lot of the stuff being taught. Still I try my best to pay attention to make sure I don't miss something important.
Right now I am viewed as the "smart guy" in class. A lot of the people who sit near me seem to feel stupid for not understanding the concepts as well as I do. The class is geared more for their development than for mine though. If you take what they knew before taking the test and compared it to they have after finals I'm sure they will make a lot of progress. On the other hand I won't make much progress since at this level there is little to be built upon so really this class is going to be a waste of time and money for me. They will get their money out of it if they can learn the material and that's what is really important.
Last Thursday we had our first quiz. Quizzes are 20 points while homework is 10 points a week so one quiz is 2 weeks of homework. I scored a 17 out of 20 because I was supposed to interpret some information on a graph and I changed the scales to make it simpler for me to work with. Since I didn't keep the scale balanced I was marked down 3 points. The process held up for me though. The ultimate outcome I determined was the right answer. The instructor said he was a stickler for accuracy so I'm not too upset about getting marked down a little bit for changing some details.
My quiz still came out to a solid B. My first week of homework was 100% so I got an A- average. Last weeks homework I got 100% on but I forgot to fill out an evaluation form afterwards so I expect to get marked down for that too. Still I expect to be in the A range.
