So, as I write this, I've completed 12 chapters of Gravity Rush for the Playstation Vita. I'm currently "stuck", as it were. The game up to this point has been, for the most part, awesome. Free-falling in any direction for any amount of time is just exhilirating, no matter how you put it. That is the one very main thing that this game gets right. In any free roam game, the main mode of locomotion, as it were, is something players will be seeing and using throughout, so the fact that the developers nailed this one aspect, it disheartens me to say that that is the only thing I can tell that the title excels at. Yes, the visuals are awesome. There is no denying that fact. But the one thing the developers should've put a whole lot more time into is the combat. Oh, the combat.
The combat isn't horrendous, per se. It really isn't. Kat, the protagonist, learns a few special moves (although they have a limited use from what I've seen), but aside from the special moves, she only has the one attack button. This isn't really a problem when facing ground enemies because you can just kick them around. The problem comes when you face bigger and faster flying enemies and the targeting associated with the 'Gravity Kick' miss by what looks like a 1/2" in-game. No, I'm not kidding. The targeting for the Gravity Kick is so horrendous, it borderlines on making the game unplayable if you can't get your bearings fast enough after swooshing past an enemy to re-align yourself and go in for another Gravity Kick. This would really not be that big of a deal except when you have literally 20-30 red 'energy balls' flying towards you while you're regaining your bearings. Some combat situations are horrendous, at least in my opinion. The worst thing I've found about the combat? At the stage I am in the game, I've upgraded Kat's Gravity Kick to the highest level possible at this point and it does not seem to have affected the lock-on of said move.
Now that the worst part of the game is out of the way, let's talk about the other things. Side missions aren't something I've spent a lot of time on at this point because I've spent my time trying to power through the story missions, which still feel a little disconnected at this point. As for the story, it always seems like you're just always going around doing nice things for people and never for yourself. There's only a handful of missions you're on that you're not doing things for other people. You'd think a story of a girl with amnesia would work for herself in trying to find out who she is and everything. Aside from that, the story is present, and works, for the most part. I'll update this review when I finish the game, with more details on the story and how it ties everythings up.
My View: Aside from the sometimes horrendous combat, Gravity Rush really is a title to be experienced. Whether or not you should buy a PSVita for it if you do not own one, is another story altogether. Have a Vita? Might as well try the Demo
