The mind is a terrible thing.
I shall write whatever comes to mind.

Day 2: Paper cut

Day after day it was the same thing, filling out one form or another. Everyone always says find a job you love and do it. And yet here I am, stuck in a tiny cubicle, at a job I clearly hate, getting paper cuts, and stealing office supplies to get back at my boss. The constant clicking and clacking of nearby keyboards drove me crazy.

I personally feel like listening to nails on a chalkboard would be more enjoyable. The torment felt endless, like I was trapped forever in this office with a hundred other mindless drones whose only purpose in life was to suck up to the boss, and hope to get a raise. Watching the clock only made time move slower.

At one point in time growing up seemed like the best thing ever, I never imagined sitting here in an office would be what growing up was all about. Making tiny people out of stolen paperclips and wads of paper, I silently reminded myself that I probably still have a lot of growing up to do.

A noise at the end of the hallway sent me into a tailspin, as I rushed to stuff my little creations into my desk drawer and pretend to actually work. Taking a stack of unfinished papers, I expertly hid them under the few that I managed to get done. Working here has taught me how to be a master of deception, a skill that isn’t that useful when your job consists of sitting a desk.

The sounds of laughter could be here a few cubicles down, and I could guess what was going on. The boss had told one of his many “jokes” and some poor sucker was forced to laugh or risk losing their job. His jokes are comparable to compost, it doesn’t smell pleasant but it helps your garden grow.

As he made his way down through, I made it my mission to escape to the break room before he had a chance to give me more work. I’m pretty sure he has it out for me. My attempt was thwarted by everyone's "favorite" secretary Bess, who made it a point to block me from my goal and yell at me about things that weren’t my fault. As I tried to calm her down so I could get away, the boss drew closer and closer. My fate was sealed and I knew it.

Shooing away Bess, he gave me way I was dreading. Taking the new workload that was assigned to me I sat down and waited till he was back in his office. Opening my drawer I took out my paper clips and paper and made a tiny voodoo doll of Bess, and stuck it full of thumbtacks, before begrudgingly starting on my work.
