Day 3: Award
“And the award goes to!” the lights in the room dimmed slightly, as a spotlight was pointed at the man on stage. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife, people were shifting nervously in their seats waiting to hear the verdict. Sensing this the man whose name was Mike, who had a thing for causing drama, made sure to pause for a few more minutes before announcing the winner.
Grinning smugly, I folded my arms and looked around. My victory had been assured, and nothing anybody could say would change that now. The award would be mine, it wasn’t much, just something to get the employees to work harder but more than anything I would have bragging rights. And that would shut up Phyllis, the worlds yappiest manager.
That woman was the bane of my existence, the only reason she was alive was to constantly challenge the little authority I had, while claiming that I wasn’t doing my job. We were both so close to getting the coveted CEO position that her taunting had gotten worst. I knew winning this would inch me closer to my goal, while also being able to make sly digs at her.
Looking over my shoulder I smiled at Phyllis, attempting to rub salt into a wound that wasn’t even there yet. She scowled at me and turned up her nose. Shifting around in my seat I hummed happily to myself.Feeling the crowd get restless, Mike opened the envelope he held in his hand and started at it with a look of disbelief before reading off the name.
“And the winner is, Brad Carter?” look over his shoulder at a person off stage for clarification.
The quietness in the room was interrupted by the sound of moving feet, as Brad went up to accept his award. Looking back at Phyllis a silent contract was formed, with nothing more than a knowing glance and a slight nod. Brad’s life was about to get a lot more hectic, and the poor man wouldn’t stand a chance.
