The mind is a terrible thing.
I shall write whatever comes to mind.

Day 7: Chase

The sound of heavy footsteps rattled me to the core. All I wanted to do was leave, why wouldn’t they just let me leave? Tucking my knees up to my chin I hoped and prayed they wouldn’t find me. I had just ducked into this vent without even giving it a second though.

I had never been more thankful in my life than now that I was shorter than most people, I don’t think I would have gotten in here. I feel like I’ve been running and hiding for days, but in reality it’s only been a few hours.

It’s funny how life can change drastically within just a couple minutes, and the only thing you can do is adapt and move on with it. The footsteps got closer and I had to keep myself from breathing too loud. They stopped right beside the vent and whispered amongst each other, I couldn’t make out a think they were saying.

I was able to get a good look at their faces this time, they wore some kind of bizarre face masks that sort of looked like me. One of their communication devices went off. “Did you find her?” the voice on the other end asked rather impatiently. They looked at each other for a second before the taller of the two picked it up and answered. “No, sir. There isn’t any sign of her.”

“Then look harder!” the voice who was clearly not impressed yelled before cutting off communication. The two people flinched before moving on, I waited till I couldn’t hear any footsteps before climbing out of the vent and taking off in the other direction.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve run this much, I think I might need some to get some exercise in the near future. The hallways where giant mazes, and I was surprised that those things never got lost. Turning a corner I ran smack dab into a group of them, before I even had a chance to turn heel and run they grabbed a hold of me.

Struggling did nothing for me but it seemed to amuse them. There were too many of them, and even if by some random stroke of luck I was able to get away one of them had already called in to say that I had been caught, and the would have chased me down before I got very far.

They dragged me pass so many rooms and through so many hallways that I thought for sure we were lost. We stopped at a big set of doors, letting go of me they pushed me forward and motioned for me to open them. Hesitantly I pushed them open, they gave way a lot easier than I thought they would and I almost ended up square on my face.

Steading myself I looked around. The room was enormous, the walls were painted the glossiest dark red. Large dark purple curtains hung upon the four windows on each side of the room.
At the front of the room was a rich oak desk with a very frail looking man sitting behind it.

“You’ve been giving us quite the hard time, my dear” The man sitting behind the desk smiled down at me, motioning for the guards to shut the door he continued “You just can’t leave” he stated. My heart sank, I just wanted to go home and to have my normal life back. I went to say something but he cut me off. “What are you so afraid of?” he stood up and made his way toward me.

“Where am I?” I asked moving back slowly.

“You are home, We are home” his voice sounding just like mine. Falling to the floor, I clutched my head as it started hurting and my ears started ringing. I remembered everything now, and why I couldn’t leave. The man hovered over me looking at me with disgust “You can’t escape from your own mind”.
