What makes a character my friend? To some that's an easy question...and to others it may be a little more in depth than...someone or something you just made up. Stories and writing are one of the essential elements to unlock man's powerful imagination. We create new and different worlds to escape from the one we know live in as if sometimes we're not satisfied or perhaps we're just bored with it. Of course, another thing man is never satisfied with is himself. We create characters not just because we may think they're cool or add a nice atmosphere to the story, but in a way...one might look up to their created character. You may think it silly to look up to something that isn't real, something that was simply born out of the confines of our complex minds, but think on it. Why create a character if they don't possess some characteristic that we may desire. Perhaps we create characters because there is something about ourselves that we see perfected in the being we assemble. Maybe they're funnier. Maybe they're stronger. Maybe they're faster, smarter, wiser. Or better yet, maybe our characters are made of something deep inside ourselves that we have not yet been able to wield, some emotion or personality trait of ourselves that we either didn't know we had or were always afraid to bring out of ourselves. A lot of the time you can see almost a perfect version of yourself in a cherished character if you look deep enough.
I find a character of mine, Rowan, who some of you may know of, in a way to be a more perfect version of myself. He has personality traits that I hope to reach someday. He's a fun guy to be around for his imaginated peers. He knows when to be funny and when's a more appropriate time to be serious, and at times has a wisdom that some don't appreciate. There are times when he tells the truth when the truth really hurts, which is something I'm often afraid to do even though it's probably better if others hear it.
A character is also an essence you can escape through, someone you can have do something that you'd love to do but never in your life would be able to accomplish. ((like another character of mine, Puuca, who can breath fire....sometimes I wish I could breath fire. xd )). Or perhaps their an outlet of stress or emotions that build up inside you that you don't want the rest of the world to see. They can become a wonderful pass-time or a terrible obsession if one isn't too careful. Sometimes...or a lot of the time, we can dirty and pervert our minds with our characters, which isn't the best way to spend your time. But sometimes they can help you through a process of mental cleansing...it just all depends on how you spend time with your character and what you create through him.
Have you tried a character lately?
